You woke up with a knot in your stomach and the feeling that today was going to be just as particularly tiring and stressful as the day before. Checking your phone, you groaned when you noticed the number of texts and missed calls you got from Zach and Tony overnight but still no sign of the only person who truly mattered in your life. It was just less than 24 hours and you were already missing your best friend. Somehow, you found enough courage and energy to get out of bed and make it to school. The halls were already full when you pushed the huge door, but the whispers when people acknowledged your presence was beyond oppressing. “What is going on?” You dared to ask one of your French classmates.
“Monty and Alex Standall got into a fight earlier this morning.” She said. “Seems like Monty is in big trouble because he nearly killed poor Alex.” She added wincing before she turned her attention back to her friends who were eyeing you weirdly. Off course, your ex-boyfriend was yet again involved in a bloody fight, why wouldn’t they look at you like this?
Groaning, you leaned back in your seat. “Damn it, Cruz.” It wasn’t a surprise to hear both names and the word fight in the same sentence. Never. They were like cats and dogs. They never got along. They never would and most certainly not after this fight. To your surprise, Mr. Porter called you out before the teacher had the opportunity to say a word about the upcoming tests and readings. “Did I do something wrong?” You finally asked after a long minute of awkward silence walking through the empty halls.
“Of course not, (Y/N).” The counselor told you. “Honor board was called this morning.”
You didn’t get any more details until you reached the library and saw for yourself that the honor board was called to handle the fight everyone was talking about. Montgomery tensed almost instantly when you stepped into the library and dropped his gaze to his bruised knuckles. Alex, on the other, had much more visible damage all over his face. The meeting didn’t last for a long time, Montgomery was, in fact, guilty of driving too fast and losing it on Alex, he admitted it. Maybe because of the look you were giving him throughout the whole thing. Deep down, you were thankful he got suspended for a few days because you wouldn’t have been able to handle seeing his face at school after what he did and certainly what you did the day before. “What happened to Sheri?” Tony asked you as he caught you up in the hallway.
Turning on your heels, you crossed your arms over your chest. “Do I really need to answer this question, Tony?”
He took a deep breath before calmly responding which only got even more on your nerves. “I thought I asked you to wait until Clay was done.”
“Well Clay is taking too long, and I couldn’t hold it together Tony!” You yelled, attracting a few curious students’ attention. “And for the record, Jeff knows about the tapes. Go tell him to wait until Clay is done with them to report the real cause of his accident and prove himself innocent of the accusations that are held against him!” You snapped at him and stormed out of school, bumping into students on your way to the parking lot, shooting daggers at the few who had the unfortunate idea of saying something until you reached your car and locked it once you were inside. It was certain that if you stayed at school, you would be in everyone’s discussions following what happened between Montgomery and Alex, so instead of another humiliation, you wisely decided to skip class – a decision you would have never even considered a year back – and drove off to your only safe place in town. The sound of the waves and birds had an instant effect on you, calming your nerves and building anger in no time. A second turned into a minute and a minute turned into hours before you finally decided to get out of the car and walked over to the small bench facing the water, a gentle smile gracing your lips when you ran your fingers over the carved letters on the old wood. One of Montgomery’s cheesy ideas, as surprising as it might be, he had plenty and this one was among a long list.
“Where are you going? I’m cold, get back here!” You whined when Montgomery suddenly let go of your body and walked away from you. Of course, it had to be one of his sudden ideas because other than that, he would never miss the chance to have you in his arms.
He walked behind the bench and you could hear him pull his keys out of his pocket before squatting down and doing whatever he was doing. He stopped after a minute and stepped back, proudly smiling at the key job he had done on the wood. “Now this place is ours.” You frowned and lazily made your way over him, smiling at the sight of your initials carved on the back of the bench. “Like it?” He grinned.
“Did I order a Montgomery with extra cheese today or what?” You chuckled as you leaned to kiss his cheek, he took the opportunity to wrap his arm around your waist and pull you as close to him as he could. “Well, I kinda like this cheesy version of you, handsome.”
“Oh yeah?”
A growl from a car engine stopping right behind you pulled you out of your thoughts and you didn’t have to look back to know who it was. You let a loud sigh escape your lips before you sat down on the bench, soon he was sitting by your side, keeping a distance between the two of you because he knew how mad you were at him. You sat there in awkward silence until you finally had enough and decided to break it before you lose your mind. “Dare to give me the slightest explanation about what you did this morning?”
He looked down at his hands. “There’s none.”
“Yeah, right.” You were about to stand up when he caught your hand. He didn’t let go of it and you didn’t push him either.
His warmth was seeping through your skin, making you relax a little bit, you almost forgot that you were beyond pissed at him. “I am sorry.” He whispered.
“It’s not me you owe an apology to, Monty.”
“(Y/N/N)…”
Snapping your hand from his hold, you quickly got on your feet. “No, don’t (Y/N/N) me, it’s not working… not anymore! I have had it up to here…” You moved your right hand above your head. “With your reckless and stupid actions! When I thought you changed, that you were actually doing something to get your shit together and be a better person, I was wrong. ”
“I changed… I…” He managed to say before you go yelling at him again.
“I SEE NO FUCKING CHANGE IN YOU! YOU ARE FUCKING BACK AT BEING YOUR VIOLENT SELF I HATE SO MUCH!” Those words. The words that scared him so much, the ones he never wanted to hear came out of your mouth were daggers. Massacre to a loving heart. “I don’t want to have anything to do with you anymore, Monty. I quit. I am done… I… I just want my life back the way it was.” The hurt expression on his face grew bigger. For a split second, your heart felt like it was about to stop beating but you collected yourself and walked away, leaving a terribly broken-hearted Montgomery behind you. Little did you know that your day was far from being over. When you got home, you noticed again a considerable amount of texts from Zach but with your luck of the day, your battery died before you could reply. “Mom, can I borrow your phone? Mine is dead.” You asked putting your best smile on your lips.
“Well hello to you too, young lady.” Your mother said with a smile as she was sorting a pile of files in the dining room. “Here, bring it back when you’re done.”
“Thanks, mama.” You quickly kissed her cheek and walked over to your room, fortunately, you knew Zach’s number by heart since it was two numbers different from yours. You opened the messages app and were about to start a new conversation when an older one caught your attention. Montgomery. ’What the fuck?’ Why would your mother chat with him? You hesitated for a moment but something in the back of your head kept telling you that you should have a look at it. You dragged your thumb on his name and pressed it open but truth was, you weren’t ready to see what was inside of it. You scrolled up to the first text which strangely was from your mother. “This is not… No…No… No, it can’t be… No, no, no, no fucking way!” You mumbled angrily as you ran down the stairs, skipping two at a time, and stormed inside the dining room. “What is this, mom?” You threw the phone at her.
Her eyes darted from you and down to the device sitting on top of her work, flashing the texts she exchanged with your ex-boyfriend a few weeks ago. “You went through my texts, (Y/N)?”
“Oh my… That’s all you have to say, mother?”
Your father heard you almost yelling from the kitchen and quickly made his way to both of you. “What is going on here?” Getting no answer from your mother, his gaze dropped on you. “(Y/N)?” He stared at you for a second but you were angrily looking at your mother. “I asked a question; I want a goddamn answer.” He raised his tone, this time getting attention from you.
“I just had the proper explanation on why Monty broke up with me.” Your gaze didn’t leave your mother as you snatched the phone from your mother’s hands and handed it over to your father.
“(Y/F/N), I can explain…” Your father looked at her, jaw clenching in anger before he looked at the numerous texts, and he understood why you were in such anger. “(Y/F/N), I did it for her best. I…”
“So, the best according to you is breaking our daughter’s heart and certainly this boy’s too? Have you seen her smile since you acted like this?” He wasn’t yelling yet he was angry at your mother but he was more sure he felt sad for you. He had to admit it, you were happier when you were dating Montgomery and he hadn’t seen your smile since you told him that the jock broke up with you. “I don’t recognize you, (Y/M/N). You literally threatened him to what? Move somewhere he can’t see her anymore? What crossed your mind?”
“He is trouble and (Y/N) wasn’t the same anymore.” She simply said, crossing her arms over her chest.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about, mom.” You growled, tears stinging your eyes once again. “I was happy, he loved me.” Shaking your head, you smiled. “He was everything I ever wished, mom. How could you do this to me?” Pain shot once more through your heart. “You ruined everything.”
“(Y/N)…”
Your mother tried to reach out for your hand but you stepped back, avoiding the physical contact. “Don’t. Don’t touch me.” Grabbing your jacket, you walked out of the house, ignoring your father’s voice calling you, tears freely streaming down your cheeks. You spent your day running from one place to another in the hope to find somewhere you could just sit and stop thinking about the massive stack of problems that were piling up in your life for the moment. Now you could add this brand new and painful one to it. Your own mother made your boyfriend break up with you and threatened to move you away if he said a word about their conversation to you to which he obeyed for the sake of being able to see you every day even if he couldn’t be with you anymore. And you were a total bitch to him. “Oh my God, what have I done?” You picked up the pace and reached the dockside in no time, but he was gone. “Damn it!” You had two options left, he was either at Bryce’s or back to his own place. You considered the first option for a minute but threw the idea away as you almost sprinted to his house. You never showed up without texting him in advance to know if his father was around, but with your phone dead, you didn’t have much choice left and took your chances as you approached the front door. You knocked once, a shy knock that barely could be heard through the thick wooden door, so you went knocking a little harder again until a woman opened. It wasn’t his mother but the maid who worked for his family.
“How can I help you?” She said before recognizing you. “Oh, miss (Y/N), come in.”
“Is Monty here?” You asked stepping inside.
She shook her head. “No, he left just a moment ago.”
“Did he tell you where he was going?” Every second you spent talking was wasted.
“No, sorry. He was a little angry when he left…”
You didn’t let her finish whatever she was saying and stormed out to get going to Bryce’s place. It was the last option you had left, other than that, you didn’t know where he could be. “(Y/N) (Y/L/N) in my place… That’s something rare!” Bryce whistled as you pushed past him and got to the pool house where you found Montgomery sitting between Justin and Zach, playing some random video game. Some jocks sitting by the poker table.
“Monty…” The three boys turned to look at you, their game was quickly forgotten as they noticed how tired you looked almost instantly. “We need to talk.”
“Not in the mood.” He responded causing Bryce and a few other jocks to laugh, you glared at them before you looked back at him, tears blurring your vision.
“I ain’t leaving until we have a goddamn talk, Cruz.” You shot back at him, your voice breaking a little bit.
The cold air of the early night made you shiver as you both walked out of the pool house. You closed the door behind you to make sure your conversation wouldn’t get heard by the curious ears but their eyes followed you through the windows, tension being sensed from miles away. “One moment you don’t wanna have anything to do with and the other you come lo…”
“Listen to me… Please.” You cut him.
He laughed a little bit. “No, I don’t want to.”
“Monty, please. Hear me ou…”
This time it was his turn not to listen to any of you had to say, despite his heart telling him to do so. You could it revenge or whatever it was for the harsh speech you gave him earlier. “I heard you and you made yourself crystal clear. Don’t waste any more energy or time on me, I am not worth it.”
“Monty…”
Yet again you found yourself unable to hold the tears from falling in torrents down your cheeks. Tiny little diamonds tinted by the blue reflection of the pool by your side. “You were damn right, I never changed.” You were to speak but he shook his head and grinned. “ And I never will. Keep this in mind.”
