You stared at your reflection in the mirror, hands resting on the edge of the sink, for minutes long, trying to bring your breath back to normal and wondering how in the hell you had let Montgomery de la Cruz, number one jerk of Liberty, kiss you. “Is everything ok here?” You nearly had a heart attack when you heard Jeff’s voice echoing the empty bathroom. You didn’t look at him and tried to collect yourself before you face him with a smile.
“Yeah… I wanted to touch up my lipstick.” You tried to sound as natural and less nervous as possible.
“Where is Jess? Have you found her?”
Damn it. You forgot about her. “She left.” You winced. “She wasn’t feeling well and Melissa took her home.” Second lie of the night. You never lied to your best friend and guilt was slowly building in your chest. You would normally tell him everything right away but this? How could you tell him such a thing? “Let’s head back with the others.” You pecked his cheek and took his hand. As you walked in, you caught Montgomery staring at you and you just looked away, your breath burning your throat and your heart taking another race in your chest. You sat next to Tony on the bleachers as Jeff and Clay went to bring some drinks. “Jeff is driving Clay back home, could you give me a ride?”
“You need to talk, uh?” He said looking straight in front of him. Tony was kind of the big brother you didn’t have. He knew exactly when someone needed to take something out of his chest and he never said a word to anyone.
“Yeah.” You said and felt Montgomery’s eyes on you. It was an invisible pressure that was driving you crazy. Jeff came back and handed you a cup before he sat next to you, pulling you close to him. You rested your head on his shoulder, yawning a little bit.
“Tired already, sweetheart?”
“Those shoes are killing me, Jeff.” You whined with an amused smile. “I think I am gonna call it an end for me. Tony is dropping me on his way so you can take this bad boy home.” You said to Jeff and taped gently Clay’s thigh.
“You text me when you get home, right?”
“Will do, handsome.” You kissed his cheek and once you pulled away, you met Montgomery’s gaze on you. “I love you.”
“Love you too, sweetheart.”
“See you on Monday, Clay.”
“See you, (y/n).” He smiled at you. Tony offered you his arm as you walked away from Jeff and Clay. Once you were out of the building, you took a deep breath, as if you have been holding your breath since you kissed Montgomery earlier. Tony didn’t say a word and watched you sit in his car next to him. You took your shoes off and sighed in relief.
“Montgomery and I kissed. I couldn’t push him away.”
That was quick. “You couldn’t physically push him away or you didn’t want to?” When you just looked down at your hands, Tony had his answer. The fact that you told Tony and not Jeff was making you feel even more guilty but you knew that the moment you would tell Jeff, he would kill Montgomery for sure and the last thing you wanted was your best friend in trouble, especially against him. “You regret it?” At that moment, his words came running back in your mind.
“You regret it?” You opened your eyes and he was looking at you with a concerned expression. You had never seen him that way. You didn’t know what to say mainly because never in your existence you had imagined kissing Montgomery de la Cruz. You just pushed him away and walked to the other side, he looked down sighing, his hand still resting against the wall. He took your silence as an answer and started walking towards the door when your words stopped him. “No.” You breathed out. “No, I don’t regret it but it’s not gonna happen again, Montgomery.” Your voice was shaky, you were barely able to stand as your knees were giving up on your body. He glanced at you before he walked out.
“No, I don’t and that’s why I am so pissed.” You whispered. Tony didn’t ask anything else, he turned his engine on and drove away from Liberty. He didn’t drive you to your house but instead, he took you to the dockside. The fresh air, the sound of the water, and the calmness made you feel instantly better. You sat on a bench, you didn’t talk to each other, you just stared at the boats and their dim reflection on the dark water. “I liked it.” You confessed after several minutes. “I really did.” You couldn’t believe your own words.
“Why did you run away from him, then?”
“Because I can’t do this.” You closed your eyes. “He is a jock, for fuck’s sake, a jock. Not just a jock but the worse of them all and … And I fucking liked kissing him.”
Tony took a moment before he spoke. “I may not be the one to tell you that you are wrong about him.” He looked at you. “But I can tell you that you have to let yourself go and see what happens next.”
“Oh yeah and get Jeff to fight with because he is more likely to do shitty things to me?” You shook your head, chuckling nervously. “ Not happening, Tony. I ain’t risking to put Jeff in trouble because of him.”
“I don’t think he’d do so.”
You frowned. “How could you be so sure of yourself Tony?”
“Because we both know him.” You rose an eyebrow. “From afar. But we do, you can’t deny it. He wouldn’t have asked you to dance with him, away from everyone, and asked if you regretted kissing him because I am pretty damn sure he enjoyed this as much as you did. He was different. You know it. If it was the jock you see every day at school, he would have done it so he could show off to his dumb friends. He would have done it Montgomery style and it wasn’t Montgomery style back there.” He stated. “See for yourself if for one second you felt like it was the same Montgomery de la Cruz we both know that was dancing with you…” He was right. From A to Z, Tony was right. You looked away from him, that was too much for you to handle. You focused on the sound of the water for a moment.
“He is a really good kisser by the way.”
“You freaking enjoyed it, uh?” He chuckled and you started laughing, your cheek turning into a bright shade of pink. “Montgomery really scored there.” You nodded as you bit your lower lip remembering just how soft and warm his lips were against yours. For a second you felt like he was still kissing you and your heart took its third race of the night.
“I don’t want Jeff to know about this… For now.”
“You are the only one to decide of that.” He gave you a reassuring smile.
“Thank you.”
