Some say that the best way to heal a broken heart is to move past the hurt, but how could one do so if they didn’t know the reason why their heart was broken? Your heart was broken, shattered into thousands of pieces, crushed to dust but yet still shooting pain from time to time, reminding you of the bitter reality that kept you thinking. Days and nights of constant thinking, no matter where you were, what you were doing, or with whom you were, your mind didn’t seem to think about something else than his words. ‘If it was up to me, we would still be together.’ What was that supposed to mean? “Still thinking about him?”
“Tony, I swear I’m gonna get crazy.” You groaned.
“How about you ask him straight away, uh?” He motioned to the jocks’ table behind him with his head. The simple sight of him made your heart flutter but squeeze in pain, he quickly glanced at you before looking back at Bryce. He was clearly avoiding you because he knew you and he knew you weren’t going to rest until you figured out the truth. Oh boy, you weren’t quite ready to know that truth.
You shook your head. “Useless, he won’t say a word.”
Saturday afternoon
Almost three weeks after his accident, Jeff was finally released from the hospital. It felt longer than three simple weeks, it was like months or years that you had been away from each other, even though you saw one another almost every day ever since he was allowed to have visits. “Ready to go home, champion?” You asked leaning against the door frame of the hospital room.
“Oh sweetheart, you have no idea how much I’m ready to leave this place.”
“Here let me help…” You moved to help him put his jacket on. He still had difficulties moving, but the doctor assured him that once he would go back to his everyday routine, he would slowly regain his mobility. “And I even got those with me.” You opened your hand revealing his earrings in your palm.
“I thought they were lost.”
“Nah, the nurse gave them to me that night you were brought here. Kept them preciously until now.” You smiled. It was over, all the worry and anxiety were gone and forgotten about. Everything would go back to normal and you were going to work hard to find out who was behind Montgomery’s decision to break up. You had to because you were lying once more to your best friend and it was hurting you. “Let’s go, Jeffereykins, everyone’s waiting for us at home.”
“What do you mean by everyone? Come on (Y/N), don’t ignore me…”
Sheri insisted on throwing a little party for his big return and she even took care of planning everything. It was a simple gathering for Jeff to catch up on what he missed during his stay at the hospital. When you stepped inside the house, right behind him, your eyes instantly dropped on the one person your last thought would be there too. “I hope you don’t mind that Monty is here …” She said when you found yourself with her and Jessica in the kitchen. You shrugged.
“He is Jeff’s friend and teammate, you did great by inviting him.” Yeah, and she did great torturing the shit out of you, he was there, a few feet away from you but you couldn’t talk to him, you couldn’t look at him. You were trapped.
“I still think you should’ve asked, Sher.” Jessica was worried about you. In fact, you didn’t say much since you arrived and she sure noticed the way you avoided any eye contact with him.
“I’m so sorry, (Y/N), I thought… You know… That you were over him and stuff…”
Could she sound any more fake than this? Not sure. You took a deep breath and put on your best smile before turning around to face her, resting your free hand on her shoulder, and you calmy spoke. “I am over him, Sheri, don’t worry about that.” You pushed past her and walked back to the backyard with Jessica right behind you.
“You and I are gonna have a serious conversation on Monday, you’re not escaping from it this time.” The brunette whispered to your ear before she went to sit by her boyfriend’s side. Besides Tony, no one knew about what happened between you and Liberty’s number one stubborn guy. Just like you, she wasn’t going to give up until she knew what was bothering you and solve it for you because she knew that you were clearly not over him. Shaking your head, you moved to sit by Jeff’s side, you felt safe and protected, a feeling you missed and much needed lately.
By the time everyone was gone, you did what you always did whenever you were with your best friend. You cuddled against his chest, listening to the slow heartbeat, you managed to get your mind to think about nothing before Jeff spoke, breaking the comfortable silence that settled in his room. “I wish I listened to you that night.” You tilted your head up immediately. “I wish I didn’t go on that damn beer run and stayed with you, sweetheart. I fucked up…”
Sitting up on the bed, you grabbed his hand in yours, gently rubbing the back of it with your thumbs. “It’s over now, Jeff but I have to admit something… That night when Clay told me what happened, I was terrified.” You paused, wiping away the tears that started falling on your cheeks. It was the first time since the accident that you talked about it. “I was so scared of losing you, that you wouldn’t make it…”
“I made a promise, remember?”
For a nine-year-old girl, being locked in a hospital room for weeks was everything but fun. You recall getting bored of drawing and coloring, let alone watching cartoons on a television that was settled a few feet away from you behind a glass wall. But you remember pretty well how ten-year-old Jeff Atkins showed up every afternoon after school, you would sit facing one another, the glass wall separating the two of you and you would talk for a long moment. He would bring you drawings and letters that the nurse would hang on your wall, something to lighten your days and bring the smile back on your face. “I wanna get back to school, Jeff.”
“Your mom said you still needed surgery before you could come back.” You nodded, your eyes instantly filling with tears. “It’s gonna be okay, (Y/N/N).”
“I’m scared.”
“I’ll be there when it’s over and we’ll do anything you want once you’re out of here.”
“What if I don’t come back?”
“You will.”
“But if I don’t…” Your father always told you that for a little girl, you were beyond mature and you thought differently. Maybe this whole sick situation got you to grow up before you were supposed to.
“If you don’t, I’ll be with you. No matter where you are, or where I am, I’ll always find a way to be with you (Y/N/N).”
You cracked a sad smile before resting your little hand on the glass and Jeff quickly did the same. “You promise?”
“I promise.”
Tears were now running freely on your cheeks, you didn’t bother to wipe them away. “Come here, sweetheart.” He pulled you back against his chest, pressing a kiss on your hair as he went. “I will never leave your side, no matter what. You have my word for this.”
