‘Emotions. This part that makes us humans. We experience happiness, pride, excitement but we can’t have the good without having the bad, can we? Anger, sadness, pain. Those emotions literally rip our hearts and break them into millions of pieces without any warning. Pieces that we can’t put back together even years later.’
You worked on not showing those emotions except to the few people you trusted. Usually when something bothered, angered, or hurt you, you tried and did your best to keep a straight face, as if it wasn’t killing you on the inside, you would usually try to cool off before you face whoever was the source of the problem. Only this time you couldn’t. It was too much for you to handle.
You felt dizzy and nauseous. “A bet?”
“You really thought I would look at someone like you (Y/N)?” He laughed “Come on (Y/N), you’re not that dumb of a girl.” You felt stupid. Terribly stupid. At that exact moment, you wished you listened to your brain rather than your feelings during that damn Winter Formal night and refused to dance with him and just got back to your friends, you wouldn’t have been used for a stupid bet. The look on his face was nothing like the one you got used to during the past months, he was back to being the Montgomery de la Cruz you hated so much. The one you thought was long gone and forgotten. At that exact moment, you didn’t know what to do so you just remained silent, holding back the tears that were blurring your visions and looking down, not willing to keep looking at him. He kept saying things. Things you wished you never heard but he said them, and with each one of his words, you felt like your heart was crushed, again and again, and again. You just listened, allowing this time the tears to fall and crash on your shoes, making tiny dark blue stains on the light blue material of your Vans.
You wiped away your cheeks with the back of your hand before you finally looked back at him. “Whoever you bet with better keep his mouth shut, I don’t want Jeff to get into trouble because of that.” You said with a shaky voice.
You walked, for a long time, your mind clearly not focusing on where you were going or what was happening around you. You felt someone grab your arm and pull you to the side. It was heavily raining outside, your clothes were completely soaked and when you finally realized what was going on, your body started shaking.
“(Y/N), is everything okay?” You shook your head and you started crying again but harder this time. You mumbled incoherent words that none of Tony who found you walking under the rain and got you to Monet’s or Skye who rushed to grab a towel to dry you off seemed to understand.
“You’re safe here.” She said in a soft tone as she rested her hands on yours.
“Do you want me to call Jeff?”
“No!” You almost yelled. “Please don’t.” You were tired, defeated, and heartbroken but still thought about not disturbing your best friend even you most needed him by your side.
“Did something happen with Montgomery? Did he hurt you?”
What were you supposed to tell them? “Just take me home, Tony, please.” Your voice was barely hearable. Skye asked her co-worker to take her shift and left with you and Tony. Despite you not being close friends, she couldn’t let you go when she knew you weren’t fine. Tony made you a cup of tea while Skye helped you get changed into warm clothes. “Thank you.” Silence fell in your room, heavy and uncomfortable. “Monty broke up with me.” You spoke as you put down the empty cup on your nightstand.
“What? Why?”
You hesitated. Should you tell them what happened or lie again as you did in the past? “I was a stupid bet.”
“What the…”
You sadly smiled. “One of his friends bet he couldn’t date me. But he did. And he won so he didn’t need to stay with me anymore.” Tears were falling again. “I was dumb to believe him, uh?”
Tony was feeling responsible for your broken heart. He was the one who pushed you towards Montgomery because he had a tiny hope that somehow the bully everyone knew had a heart and that maybe you moved something inside him. But it turned out that you didn’t, that everything he showed in front of you was just a huge comedy. An extremely well-played comedy that you wished you have never seen. “Don’t say anything to Jeff… Please.”
“He’s gonna know at some point, (Y/N)”
You sighed. “He doesn’t need to know the truth.” You looked down at your hands, tugging on the thin leather bracelet around your left wrist. “I’ll just make up some excuse…”
“Lying to him another time will get back to you…”
He was right. If you had gotten through it one time, the second might have huge consequences on your friendship. “I know, Tony. But I don’t want him to get in trouble because of my dumb and irresponsible choices.” He didn’t add anything. You were right and he knew it, Jeff would kill Montgomery if he knew what really happened. Both Tony and Skye felt like there was more than just a bet, it couldn’t be that easy but none of them said a word to you. They made sure you didn’t need anything before they left you on your own and the moment your bedroom door closed, tears started falling again. You couldn’t stop crying until your phone started ringing and you saw Jeff’s name on the screen. You cleared your throat before you pressed the phone against your ear. "I was about to text you, handsome.“
"Is everything okay, sweetheart? You sound sick.” His voice always warmed your heart and even if you felt crappy as hell, you would be a million times better just hearing his voice.
“Yeah, I wasn’t feeling good this morning and it just got worse so I went back home.”
“But Montgomery didn’t tell me anything…”
The only sound of his name, made you want to cry again. You took a deep breath before you spoke again, trying to steady your voice and sound normal. “He doesn’t know either. Tony gave me a ride actually.”
“How do you feel now? Do you need me to bring you anything? Did you call your par…”
You giggled. His paranoid tone always made you smile. He couldn’t help himself from worrying about you even when there were no reasons to, he loved you and he hated to see you in pain. “Calm down, Jeff. Don’t worry about me okay? I’m feeling much better.”
“You know I always worry about you, my pretty girl.”
“Well then come and worry at my place after practice.”
“That was part of my plan, beautiful. Do you want anything special?”
“Just you, Jeffereykins.” He was enough to you. Just the thought of his name lightened your mood, made you forget about what happened a few hours back. There was no doubt over the fact that no matter what, Jeff would always be there for you, through highs and lows. By the time he arrived at your house, you were half asleep on your bed, drained out of your energy after crying so much. You didn’t notice his presence until you felt the bed dip under his weight and his arms circle your body, you snuggled as close as possible against him, bringing your hand to his face, tracing over his features without even looking at him.
“Don’t tell me you were just being sick, sweetheart…”
He knew you a little too well. “Monty and I aren’t together anymore.” You felt his grip around you tighten a little more. “We fought too much lately.”
“You seemed fine though…”
“We were at times.” You paused, unsure of what to say next. You were beyond fine. The few dark days you had only made your relationship stronger, and against all odds, you stayed together close to nine months. A record for him. A bet, actually. “It’s better this way.” But Jeff wasn’t duped. He knew there was more than just a couple of fights and disagreements but he didn’t push it too far, he was already planning a serious talk with Montgomery but as for now, his main priority was you.
With your parents’ agreement, he took you out for dinner and you slept over at his place. His parents were always happy to see you, especially his mother. She loved you like her own daughter and she often asked her son when you were coming to their house. She knew you weren’t fine since Jeff brought you home during the week but she didn’t question him nor you and welcomed you with a warm hug and sweet words. You changed yourself into one of Jeff’s sweatshirts, his scent made you relax and when you finally were in bed, all warm and comfortable in his arms, you couldn’t sleep. You were feeling a lot better but whenever you closed your eyes, you saw Montgomery telling you those things, you opened your eyes, defeated and giving up on sleep but keeping it silent so you wouldn’t wake up your best friend. Let me tell you that the next morning, you looked like a zombie not to mention that you couldn’t focus on anything during class. Side effects of a broken heart.
