When the whispers you heard were all about you and Montgomery not being together anymore, now they turned into how your best friend almost died in a car crash and most of them were saying that he was completely drunk while driving which obviously was completely untrue. Jeff was sober. But of course, the more twisted the story was, the better the gossips were. You walked on your own through the corridors, dragging everyone’s attention on yourself. Well, how couldn’t you? Dark circles, messy hair, oversized sweatshirt. You had the perfect look of someone who hadn’t slept in days. And indeed, you hadn’t. You hadn’t slept properly since the beginning of the academic year and now it had gotten worse since you spent most of your free time, at the hospital by Jeff’s side.
You kept walking back and forth, holding his jacket in your hands as if you let go of it, you wouldn’t see him anymore. Minutes turned into hours and soon the sun was rising outside when the doctor finally showed up in the corridor filled with Liberty’s juniors. No one had slept and the ones that were a bit drunk quickly sobered up when they heard about what happened. You weren’t surprised to see these many people showing up to see how things were for Jeff, everyone liked him. Even Montgomery was there, standing a little further away from you all, hands shoved deep in his jeans’ pockets. You held your breath until the doctor finally spoke. “Your friend got extremely lucky.”
“Oh thank God…”
You had to beg the doctor to allow you to see your best friend, even if it was from afar. “Five minutes and no more than two people.” He instructed. Both Clay and you followed the doctor to the room but you couldn’t get in, you stayed behind the large window glass behind which your best friend was, tied to many monitors and machines.
“He’s gonna be fine, (Y/N).” You nodded, unable to say a word. Clay was right because just a few hours after Zach drove you to your house, you received a phone call from Jeff’s mother telling you that he woke up and that he wanted to see you.
“Jeffereykins…”
“Am I in heaven?”
“Shut up, idiot, you scared the hell out of me, you know.” He had to stay there for at least a week which meant you spent most of your free time there, sometimes falling asleep on the uncomfortable armchair but you didn’t mind as long as you were by your best friend’s side.
“You should go home and rest for a bit.”
You shook your head. “Nah. I’m good.”
“You’re obviously not, (Y/N).” Jessica was more than concerned about your well-being. You weren’t smiling anymore, didn’t pay much attention to your physical appearance or school work for that matter. You were barely able to hold a complete conversation with people and not to mention the fact that you didn’t eat properly. “How about we go have lunch somewhere else?” You didn’t fight back, you just followed Jessica to her car and let her drive to Rosie’s. “I know it’s not the right time to talk about that but you didn’t tell me what happened with Montgomery.”
A loud sigh escaped from your lips as you dropped your hamburger back on the plate. “I was naive to believe everything he said… or did for that matter.” You said the last part of your sentence in a loud whisper, memories of happy days with the one you thought had changed coming back to your mind, breaking and crushing your heart once more. Only this time tears didn’t fill your eyes as they did during the first few days after he broke up with you. It was like your body was numb at this point in your life, you were too tired and worn out to start crying or get angry.
“What happened? (Y/N) you seemed so fine together…”
“We were…” You glanced down at your left wrist where a leather bracelet tied in an eternity knot was hanging. “That’s what he made me think.”
There wasn’t a day in the past nine months you spent with him that he didn’t surprise you somehow. Every single day, you would discover a hidden side of Montgomery de la Cruz. It was a blessing being with him, who would have thought that? He put so much effort into your relationship and in his behavior that even his mother was noticing the drastic change in her son and she didn’t hesitate to mention it to you the last time you saw her. She was extremely happy to see him this way. During the last day of the summer holidays, you decided to hang out by the dockside. Classic spot, you would say, right? It was a sweet reminder of where everything between the two of you took its real start. The place where you used to sneak behind everyone’s back just to be together and somehow you still do that even though everyone knew about your relationship. It was your happy place. “I don’t wanna go back to school.” You whined, hiding your face in his neck.
“Jesus Christ, you don’t wanna go back to school? Am I hearing you right?”
You gently smacked his chest and pulled away, turning your back at him. “Shut up, Cruz. I never liked school.”
“Says the girl with straight As.” He shot back at you with a smirk. You didn’t have to look at him to know it. God, you knew him so well that you scared yourself sometimes.
You spun on your heels, arms crossed over your chest. “You’re annoying, you know that?”
“Hmm hmm but still you love me.” He quickly grabbed your waist and pulled you back against him. You couldn’t fight the smile on your lips and certainly not able to suppress the urge of kissing him. He was a drug and you were addicted to him. “When did I get this lucky?” He whispered when you broke the kiss. The blush on your cheeks was inevitable. You were amazed by how after so many months of dating, he still had the same effect he had on you the very first time he kissed you. “I love you so much, (Y/N).”
“I love you too, Monty.”
It was perfect. Everything was perfect. Montgomery took out of his pocket the leather bracelet he got for you a few days back but was unsure of when he should give it to you. He grabbed your left wrist and with a few movements managed to tighten the bracelet around it, ending his gesture with a kiss on the inside of your hand. You could see the exact same one on his right wrist. “Cheesy right?” He said when he caught your gaze on the one he had.
“You’re ruining the moment, idiot.” You giggled.
He smiled and pecked your lips.“I want us to last forever.”
“We will.”
Maybe it was all part of the bet. Maybe you should have known that he would never change and certainly not for you. Or any girl. Or anyone. Maybe you should have kept your distance from him when tutoring him. Maybe you shouldn’t have done a lot of things but you did them and the worst part of this: You didn’t regret any of them and if you had to do them again, you certainly would. “I was a bet, Jessica. A stupid bet to him and one of his teammates.”
“He did all of this for a damn bet?” You could sense anger in her voice. You nodded and proceeded to explain and repeat everything he said that day, your heart aching in pain. “There must be something else, (Y/N)…”
You shook your head. “Jess, promise you won’t say a word about that to Justin…”
She sighed. “I won’t.” You gave her an insisting look. “I promise.” After finishing your food, you still wanted to head back to Liberty for your afternoon classes even when you knew that those you had were with him. You were welcomed with whispers when you entered the French class and quickly you understood why. The only available seat was the one next to Montgomery. Great. You dropped your bag on the floor and sat down, ignoring the curious students who turned around to look at the two of you. This was going to be a very long afternoon.
