Behind the silent tears that were rolling uncontrollably down your cheeks, there was a devastated teenager who ruined any chance to get her boyfriend back but also probably destroyed her parents’ marriage. You felt numb and your knees seemed to be giving up on supporting your body when Montgomery just turned around and left you standing there with no chance of saying anything that you had to hold onto the nearest chair if you didn’t want to collapse on the floor. “Let me drive you home.” Zach hooked his left arm around your waist, resting his warm hand on your hip and holding your right hand as he walked you out of Bryce’s house, all eyes, except Montgomery’s, on the two of you until you were out of sight. “You okay?” He asked after a minute of driving.
Nodding, you closed your eyes for a moment. “I… Can you drop me at Jeff’s, please?”
“Sure.” And silence fell once more between you. The unspoken words after you two kissed a few days back were heavy in the atmosphere but you were in no mood to get the talk about it as for now. Once he stopped the car, you didn’t move right away, you were scared Jeff might not want you around. “You want me to wait for you just in case?”
“Nah, I’ll be fine on my own. What could possibly go even more wrong here, uh?” You chuckled nervously. “Thank you, Zach.”
The lights were thankfully still on when you shyly knocked at the Atkins’ door. Your heart was beating fast and loud in your chest, if this was to be another rejection today, it would probably stop functioning. The door flew open to your best friend who didn’t allow you to say a word as he pulled you in his arms, mumbling apologies as he kissed your hair. “I called your dad. He is relieved to know you’re here, honey.” Mrs. Atkins told you as she sat in front of you, pushing a hot cup of tea towards you.
“Thank you, I didn’t mean to bother anyone.” You whispered.
She took your free hand in hers and gently squeezed it making you look at her. “You are like a daughter to us, (Y/N). Don’t say this again, okay?” That woman was the kindest and most loving woman you knew, she certainly made you wish you were actually her daughter. Seeing her son walk in the kitchen, she took it as a hint for her to leave you two to have a much-needed talk.
“Jeff…”
He spoke at the same time. “I fucked up, sweetheart.” Jeff’s voice was full of regret as he spoke, not letting you a second to say a word until he was done. He apologized way too many times as if he was scared that you might not forgive him for the truths he told you just a few days back. He was hurting all that time he was away from you. “It’s only been not even two days but still, I missed you. I missed my happy best friend, my sunshine.” It was the proof that no matter what happened between the two of you, nothing would ever be able to pull you apart for a long time. Maybe death. By the time he was done speaking, almost breathless, you noticed tears on his cheeks. Tears you haven’t seen since you were little kids and had to be separated because of your health issues. “This won’t happen again, but if it does, slap the hell out of me. Put my mind back in place.”
Cupping his face, you pressed your lips to his cheek. “I’ll remember this one. Yeah.” Your heart ached less because you fixed at least one thing in that large pile you had accumulated over the past few weeks and days. The most important one you might say. Your friendship was worth the world to you and you couldn’t even think about a future without Jeff by your side.
After many sleepless nights and emotionally exhausting days, the sleep you got that night was beyond refreshing and certainly much needed. After you were forced to finish the cup of tea Mrs. Atkins made you, Jeff dragged you behind him to his bedroom. “Are you sure I can stay for the night? I mean we have school tomorrow and…”
“Will you just shut it and get dressed, sweetheart?” He tossed you a t-shirt which you got right before it hit you in the face.
And that was it. You ended up tucked in your best friend’s arms, his fingers playing with your locks until you fell asleep in comfort you missed. The next day, you were confused as you slowly emerged from a deep sleep and you felt a hard body pressed against your back but you quickly remembered the previous night’s events. Jeff’s grip tightened around your waist pulling an instant smile on your lips as he pressed a kiss to your shoulder. “Morning cuddle bear.”
“Morning beautiful.” You felt him loosen his arms and took it as a hint to turn around so you were facing him. Jeff pushed away a few strands of hair and gently rubbed your cheek with his thumb. “How did you sleep?”
The smile on your lips was inevitable as you played with the silver necklace hanging loose around his neck. “I haven’t slept so well in so long.”
With a pounding heart, you pushed open the front door of your house which was filled with a heavy silence. Unusual. As you walked inside, Jeff right behind you, you heard your mother’s voice from the kitchen. “(Y/N)? (Y/F/N)?” She walked out and rushed to cup your face. “Oh sweetie, I was worried about you.”
“Where’s dad?” You asked pushing her hands away almost in disgust.
“He… He left shortly after you but you’re alright and it’s all that matters, honey.” She went to touch you again but you stepped back, back hitting Jeff’s chest in the movement. “(Y/N), don’t be so hard on me. I’m still your mother.”
“A mother who ruined my relationship.”
“For your best.” She snapped, all that sweetness she was showing just seconds ago gone. Your mother crossed her arms over her chest and you knew it was no good sign. “Now young lady, get ready for school, I’m driving you.”
The only response she got was a loud laugh, a terrible fake one before you rushed to get changed and grab your bag on the way. Jeff remained a silent witness to the low fight happening between your mother and you. He didn’t want to step in because he knew he couldn’t fix anything and he certainly knew you would be beyond mad if he did. “Let’s go”
“(Y/N)?”
“No. You don’t get to boss me around after what you did to me. I don’t wanna hear a word from you if it’s not an apology for what you did to me.” Your mother opened her mouth to speak but you cut her off, holding your hand in front of you. “And don’t try to put Jeff into this, he has nothing to do in it.”
“I don’t regret what I did. Look what this boy did to you.” She looked at you up and down. “You never spoke to me like this before and I don’t like this attitude you’re giving me young lady.”
“Get used to it.” You harshly retorted before storming out of the house. The only sight of your mother made your blood boil like lava and you couldn’t stand being around her anymore. It was like air became heavy whenever she was around, you could only see the texts and threats she sent to Montgomery and the way she destroyed her daughter’s first relationship. “Did I overreact, Jeffereykins?”
“It’s still raw and painful, sweetheart.” He rested his free hand on your knee, giving you a gentle squeeze, eyes not leaving the road in front of him. “I think you should lay it off for the day.”
Easy for a few days until you noticed all the eyes at school glued on you, even in class when you tried to be as quiet and invisible as you could. The weird looks were accompanied by loud whispers when you made your entrance in French class and took your seat, the empty one next to Montgomery who was back from his suspension. When you would usually chat and flirt a little before the teacher showed up, now it was a heavy silence filling the back of the room. You looked ahead of you, unconsciously playing with the leather bracelet around your wrist, which didn’t go unnoticed by your ex-boyfriend, and looked down at the one hanging on his own wrist. Good days were far behind you. You became the strangers you once were. Tragic. Heartbreaking. For you. Only you. You were unaware of what you were about to see as you walked towards the cafeteria. An apple in one hand, your phone in the other, you pushed the door open with your shoulder, still not looking in front of you until you reached your table and sat by Jeff’s side. You frowned and looked up to notice Jessica’s livid face around you, your best friend’s included. “What?” You didn’t get an answer right away until you followed Jessica’s eyes to the jocks’ table behind you. The same blonde who caused your first fight was sitting by Monty’s side, his arm around her, saying something probably dumb that made her laugh like an idiot. “Awesome.”
