The weekend went too fast in your opinion.
Too fast.
And when Monday came, you started freaking out. On your morning ride with Jeff to Liberty, you anticipated the moment you would see Montgomery. Your best friend didn’t question your pretty silent behavior, he just assumed you were still beat by the Sunday afternoon you spent together on the beach. When he parked his car, you saw Montgomery’s Jeep not far from you. Your heart took a sudden race in your chest. Again and because of him. The halls were packed with noisy students as usual but the noisier was next to your locker. Justin, Scott, Zach, and some other jocks were there laughing at some dumb shit Bryce just said. Montgomery was there too, laughing just like the others, his gaze dropping on you as soon as you walked past them. You just avoided looking at him as you walked to your locker. Jeff kissed your cheek before he left to see them. You quickly opened your locker, you nervously shoved some books in there and when you closed it, Jessica was right there, looking at you with a suspicious look. “Jesus Christ, Jess! You scared me!” You gasped but she kept staring at you with the same look. “What?” You said trying to keep a straight face knowing that Montgomery was two lockers away from you.
“You are hiding something.” She simply responded before she took your arm and dragged you behind her.
“What would I be hiding for God’s sake?” You sighed when she pushed you inside an empty classroom and locked the door behind her.
She leaned against the door and crossed her arms over her chest. “You tell me.” You hesitated. For as much as you trusted Jessica, you couldn’t tell her about what happened between you and Montgomery.
“You are the one sneaking behind my back.” You shot back at her, thanking your memory for reminding you that she had left the party with Justin without telling anyone. “Where did you go with Justin on Friday night?”
She blushed. “Who told you?”
“Not much of importance there, missy. You were drunk.”
“I was. And Justin took me home. I swear he just took me home.” She added when you gave her your mom look.
“You like him, don’t you?” You teased poking her sides.
She started laughing. “He is cute.” She said blushing even more. “And we have class so we’re taking this conversation to some other time.” She added quickly and walked out of the room. You went to your biology class and then to your peer communication one. You sat in the very back of the room hoping that no one would notice you, especially not Montgomery, since to your forever damned soul, you had to see him there too. You were busy scribbling stuff on an empty page of your notebook when Zach dropped a piece of paper on it.
Is everything ok?
You simply smiled at him and nodded, folding the small paper and throwing it back on his desk.
Just tired
He just smiled back at you and you went back to your activity. You avoided any eye contact with the other students and tried to look like you were paying attention to what the teacher was saying about friends and family. When the bell rang, she reminded you to check your Brown Paper Bags before you left. You never did it and you were not planning to anytime soon so you just walked to your French class hoping that Montgomery would ditch it just like he did in the past few weeks. But he didn’t. He was there, chatting with Justin who was sitting on your desk. When they both spotted you, Justin apologized before he walked to his own. You just dropped your bag on the floor and sat, hoping that a) the teacher would show up very soon and b) that the two long hours would be over very quickly. You felt Montgomery staring at you for a moment before the teacher came in and caught his attention. You managed to stay focused on what she said just like you did when Montgomery wasn’t there but from time to time, you felt his look on you and it was pretty disturbing. You felt like your cheeks were on fire and your heart… Oh, your heart was beating like if you ran miles without a break. Once the final bell of the morning rang, you almost ran out of the classroom when the teacher called you and Montgomery to her desk.
You stood next to him, wondering why she called the two of you. “Congratulations Ms. (y/l/n), here is the best grade I have ever seen in my whole carrier.” She handed you your last test with a big red A+ on it. You just smiled at her, nervous, because she quickly changed her tone when she looked at Montgomery. “Well, you, on the other hand, didn’t show up that often and your grades aren’t the best I have seen.” Well, that was embarrassing for both of you. You hated when the teachers compared you to the others, mainly because you just worked hard for your grades and anyone could do the same. “You will need to be tutored for the rest of the year. This class is keeping you in the baseball team and your grades aren’t enough.”
You hesitated before you spoke. “What do I have to do with all of this?”
She glanced at you and started writing down a few things. “You, Ms. (y/l/n), have plenty of time since you’re not part of the cheerleading team and you have amazing grades.” There she was talking about your grades again. “I am expecting you to use some of your free time to tutor Mr. de la Cruz.”
“What?” You both said at the same time and looked at each other in total confusion.
“I want you to make sure his grades go above C or else he will be benched for the rest of the season. Three hours a week starting from this week.” She finished and walked out of the classroom.
“I can find someone else you know.” He told you scratching the back of his neck. Was Montgomery de la Cruz nervous or was that your imagination?
You shook your head and for the first time since you have known him, you smiled. “No. I’ll do it. It’s fine.”
“You sure? I really don’t want to bother you.”
You rolled your eyes with an amused smile. “You don’t bother me, Montgomery.” He smiled. Woah, Montgomery de la Cruz knew how to smile. “We just have to see when we can get started, you still have practice.” You said. He nodded before you sat in the nearest chairs with his timetable in front of you. You managed to find two hours on Wednesday afternoon and one on Friday after practice. “Is it working for you this way?” You looked at him.
“It’s perfect. Thank you, (y/n).” You knew that this tutoring situation was going to be a big challenge for both of you and it was certainly going to lead you to something out of control.
