Analysis
The title of the episode, “Beyond the Limit of Darkness and Light,” has a significant meaning. It refers to the battle between Gaara and Naruto, where Gaara represents darkness while Naruto represents light. It’s also referring to the battle between Orochimaru and Hiruzen, where Orochimaru represents darkness while Hiruzen represents light.
As the transformed Gamabunta holds Shukaku in place, Naruto awakens Gaara. Tapping into the fox’s power again, Naruto headbutts Gaara and destroys Shukaku’s form. Naruto has destroyed Shukaku’s form, proving that the light overcomes the darkness. Since Shukaku is gone, Gamabunta has decided to leave as well. Therefore, it is now a battle between Naruto and Gaara.
Across Konoha, the village’s ninjas, including the parents of many of the Genin, begin the counterattack against the invading forces. At the site of his battle with Orochimaru, Hiruzen realises that he does not have enough strength left to fully seal Orochimaru’s soul and instead opts to seal the part of his former pupil’s soul within his arms. Robbing Orochimaru of his ability to use jutsu, Hiruzen bids his enraged student a fond farewell as he dies, reciting one last proverb. Everyone in the Hidden Leaf Village defeats the enemies because they have the will of fire, which is the need to protect something precious to them. Therefore, the third Hokage had the will of fire to protect his village; hence why he sacrificed his life to save it. It’s also one of the reasons why the fourth Hokage died; he wanted to save the village because he had the will of fire to protect the village. Hiruzen and the Fourth Hokage share the same fate, especially in how they died; hence, they were both courageous. The sad part about this is not only because Hiruzen died, but also because, before his death, he saw the old Orochimaru, the young student whom Hiruzen used to admire. This means that deep in his heart, he still cared about his former student, Orochimaru. This battle was hard for Hiruzen to face—to fight a student he once considered worthy to become Hokage, behaving like this is heartbreaking. Therefore, there was an element of death when Hiruzen died, and it was a tragedy that a good hokage died. Orochimaru is a static character through and through who refuses to change, as he will continue his pursuit of power and doesn’t show remorse that his former teacher has died. Orochimaru just symbolises pain, suffering, and death wherever he goes; hence why he is the main antagonist of the Naruto anime series.
At this time, Naruto and Gaara jump at each other, and Naruto succeeds in throwing the winning blow. Naruto also had the will of fire, which protected his friends. Therefore, that’s why Naruto won the battle. It’s because he was protecting something precious to him, which is similar to Haku’s protection of Zabuza. Therefore, Naruto was applying the advice he learned from Haku.
The lesson from this episode is that sometimes you have to believe in yourself to succeed in life.
