Taylor Elena Harris sits across from me at a fancy table that I booked the second she said yes to me down on my knees. The ring I put on her fingers glistening as the candlelight hits it in the Italian restaurant we are in. She’s ordered a glass of red which I turned into a bottle, a dish that I cannot pronounce but she tells me it has chicken in it and a side of bruschetta which we intend on sharing.

Taylor has opened me up to different cuisines, we’ve spent the remaining days of our summer with one another eating at different restaurants. However Italian has remained our favourite so far. As the weather turned fresher and the leaves fell marking the end of the summer weather, I pulled her into me every night to keep her warm.

For the final night of our break, before university begins, I’ve brought her to Bottega Louie. I knew that she would love the patisserie selection. It’s a five star dining experience and so we are dressed up. Me in a suit with a pale pink shirt that she purchased for me as a gift. Taylor has adorned herself in a dusky pink gown which hugs her figure and sweeps down to the floor. Her soft skin radiant glistening under the chandeliers. Gold heels complete her look, and as she sits with her legs crossed in front of me, wearing my ring, I decide now is the right moment to show her my canvas.

“I have something for you Taylor” I say to her as she looks up at me, smiling. I’ve grown to love that smile, I find myself endlessly finding ways to make her grin.

She pulls at the red ribbon and opens the paper slowly, I watch her eyes and register the gasp that escapes her lips as she takes it in.

The waiter drops off our food and smiles down at the canvas. Eyeing her and then the picture after setting the food down.

“In all honestly Matthew should you do that then you’ll have to take the pasta with me, as I cannot live without it.” She smirks and I chuckle. Just loving it when she says my name.

Genuinely university is a new chapter for us, I’m not quite ready to leave behind our summer. Our time where only we exist and nobody else. Sharing her with others, even if they’re just looking at her will be difficult. I gaze up at her and tell myself that she is mine, that I will do anything to defend her. To keep her.

“Without a doubt” she smiles at me jovially. Taylor has been writing music, actual music with notation. It’s fascinating to watch, we’re both creatives and it’s one of my favourite things about us.

Once she excuses herself to the restroom, without me. I watch her leave, her hips swaying in her dress, and thank all that is good in the world that she is mine. Pulling my phone out of my suit jacket as the waiter collects the empty dishes, I notice a message from Jay Gilbert Scott.

I send off a quick reply. Jay has been a long standing friend of mine. Jay is an example of a person that has been changed entirely by his life experiences; his huge wealth has made him self entitled, his callous father making him harsh and condescending. The only positive attribute he acquired was the kindness his mother showed him, yet still he refuses that side of himself almost all of the time.

Taylor and I haven’t broadcasted our engagement, although she has worn her ring continually. With the exception of Taylor telling her mother and Rhea, her best friend. And me telling my mother, we haven’t told anybody else, we haven’t seen anybody else either. We diverged the news to my mother and she practically fainted. Joking about a double wedding as Steve had proposed to her a short time before.
