It's Tuesday, the next day after Monday, marking that another crappy week is truly happening. He tries to compose his anger, but his fists are quivering from rage, sweat is beading down his forehead, his teeth are gritted and one of his feet taps the floor repeatedly.
"Elliot, can you stop doing that?" Vincent speaks up from across the table. Maxis turns to him and gently edges his hand into Elliot's giving him a reassuring squeeze. "It's okay, I promise." He whispers into his ear, sending sparks.
"So, we're all familiar with the rescue mission, correct? The General speaks, standing up from his seat as several members of the military who crowded around, watching.
"Why do you have us keep going over this?! She's missing! They took her!" Snaps Elliot, rising to his feet and pounding his fists into the table leaving a noticeable dent.
"Sorry..." He mumbles. "It's okay, the table doesn't matter. I completely get why you're angry, Elliot." The General responds.
"Dawww, did you hurt the table's feelings?" Vincent jokes, picking on Elliot "Dude! Why are you being such an ass?" Elliot yells.
"And need I remind you; Allie is dead?! And you vomited flowers, vomit and blood over me!"
"I was sick! And I never meant to hurt, Allie! If I could go back in time and stop myself, I would! I just panicked when she found out. I'm a chronic fuck-up, alright?"
"I don't even want to hear it." Vincent says, storming off.
"I am deeply sorry about him, Elliot. He has a-lot of things to work through.
I can say most of the people I take in on this team specifically are troubled and why I choose to do that is so they make something of themselves, strengthen in time and hopefully move on from the past, looking and working towards their futures." General Peterson apologizes.
"Anyway, my team before this little interruption. I have debriefed you on what we know about the group that snuck in here which is admittedly very little.
We we're aware of them, knew they we're up to some shady stuff, but they weren't causing any real trouble so to speak before. But now they have, broke into our military base and kidnapped one of our own. I have spoken to my bosses and they feel we need to bring them down now.
Elliot silently turns to Maxis. "What did you do to end up on this team? You're the purest, angel saint I have ever met. You never actually told me during the whole duration of university when you convinced me to enlist..."
"Do you really want me to answer this? No one is perfect, Elliot."
"......"
"Perhaps a story for another time." And Maxis turns to focus back on the General.
"So, here is what we're going to do.
We're going to infiltrate this groups headquarters, we've figured out they have a main location they operate out of, but it's across another countries boarder so use discression...
How you get into this group's headquarters is up to you, but know we won't be rescuing you right away. You are to gather intel on them, and keep an eye out for Kiera.
When you have anything of value on them, their name, what illegal activities they are likely partaking in, where the weak points are in their security, you know what to look for, you smuggle it out however you can.
We will have a spare backup team stationed further back who will retrieve evidence if safe to do so and keeping their eyes on their headquarters 24/7 but won't be directly intervening till later.
When we have what we need, we will invade the place, rescuing and sorting out all the victims, retrieve you and arrest the leaders and staff. Is that understood?
Behind me, on the left side of the board is who is going undercover. On the right side is who's providing assistance from afar, outside. And undercovers, be careful not to expose yourself.
While they did breach our security... their objective was one person and one person only, considering you weren't around, Elliot due to your own misadventures, but did raise the alarm there previously, you're going to be on the 2nd team, retrieving intel.
It's not a safe idea to send you in. Had you been home at the same time, Kiera was, I'm sure you would have been a target too.
We have no reason to believe they know who does work for us other than Elliot, Kiera, and maybe Vincent, no sensitive info of ours was stolen.
You are all now dismissed, and are to carry out this mission. Good luck." Says the General, leaving the group alone to check the board.
As everyone departs and begins to mingle, Elliot feels a longing to rescue Kiera, to be a part of this no matter what.
"Elliot." Maxis speaks up, his finger on the board.
"Uh-what?"
On the board next to Maxis name is, 'Undercover'
"You can't be serious..." Elliot says. "Looks like it." Maxis responds. "And good thing I do not keep photo frames around our apartment..."
"I and Kiera would kill you if you took a 'family photo'"
"Ha, I know. Are you okay with this though? I'm not going to be around to support you. What will you do?"
"I don't know..."
"Can I suggest something?"
"...."
"Don't burn all your bridges, you need to repair some of them. Vincent's really pissed off at you still regarding Allie and-"
"I know, I know. I'll try to patch it up with him, okay? You're not always going to be around as you tell me... And more. We're in the Military and anyone of us could die tomorrow."
"And Allie did, Elliot."
"...."
"So, try to patch things up with Vincent, okay? I... I love you. I have to go, Elliot. See you on the other side hopefully."
And Maxis leaves him, and Elliot feels alone in a room full of people.
No, his not staying here.
---
Elliot shivers, feeling the temperature drop more and more into the minuses as he follows the undercover group through the middle of a blizzard.
He snuck onto transport to go with them, no one has realized his here yet, that the team grew by one more, a thick jacket with a fluffy hood covering his face.
They've trekked for hours, officially having made it cross the border into a country that is not their own. They see in the distance, a modern, but reinforced building with multiple levels partially buried into a cliff.
"Time to find out who our unknown group really is." Speaks up Thea who's one of the leaders for the undercover team.
As everyone stares at it, Maxis slides right in-front of Elliot, peering right into his hood and he can make out, Maxis whispering under his breath, 'You have got to be fucking kidding me!'
Maxis doesn't say anything and slowly turns around, gently taking Elliot's gloved hand and they slowly follow the rest of the group.
As they get closer and closer the building, the group now really spread out so they're not spotted together in a clump, they hear trudging.
"Is someone coming our way?" Elliot whispers. "I think so..." Maxis whispers back and then they hear a scream come from the far right, Jarod is being dragged around by an angry dog, a breed he doesn't recognize, blood is dripping off his teeth.
"Shit, run!" Maxis whispers, pushing Elliot and they take off running, everyone else also running while they've lost a few, being mauled by more vicious dogs.
As they run, they see someone trip over and they are trying to drag themselves along, but there is a metal trap around their foot, they're bleeding out quickly.
"Shit, shit, Elliot, stop. Stop!" Maxis says, yanking Elliot back and they both freeze, Maxis arms wrapped around his stomach. He feels his face turn bright red.
"Halt! Every one of you, unless more of you want to die!" Shouts a voice in the distance, clearly through a loudspeaker.
They're speaking English, but they have foreign accents lying underneath.
They all see people geared up head to toe like them from the snow, coming closer and closer, some dogs on leads just as the snowstorm kicks up more and more till Elliot can't see a thing, all he can feel is Maxis hugging him tight.
Elliot blinks his eyes; they feel heavy and the temperature no longer feels minus 0 anymore and he feels like his lost some clothing layers. Looking around, a room comes into focus. Sitting up, he manages, but finds his wrists himself fastened to the rails of a bed in a wide room, clearly an infirmary.
"You have got to be kidding me." He hisses under his breath and he sees all the others undercover are here too, but there is some faces amongst the crowd he doesn't recognize. Thea is here and glaring at him subtly.
His not supposed to be here. "So, what are we dealing with?"
He recognizes some voices immediately, his heard them before... from his troubled past when he was a teenager.
He was with a gang, a small one a long time ago. They broke into office buildings and pricy homes for valuables to sell.
It's how Lance, Jerry and him went to jail; they we're caught by police while the others managed to escape. Seems their little gang is not so small, they're full-blown crime operation now.
But what do they? Oh, his fucked himself and his team over. They'll recognize, Elliot, the leaders.
But maybe they don't know Elliot and others infiltrated them when they we're set up back in their country outside Centre Valley? The team there might not be the same team that is here, but there is always a chance and the two men, Elliot did square off with might not have reported an accurate depiction of Elliot or even reported at all. Elliot can only hope he doesn't compromise everything.
"Don't know entirely yet. Quite a few people we're found outside in the snow, showing up every few hours. Some alone, some with others.
Our dogs sniffed them out, some fell into our traps. Not all are alive." A man named Gavin Taylor explains to another man, Dion Cohen.
"Hmm, weird." Dion responds.
"Do you think maybe there was some other slave traders out there? Would explain the disjointed group we have before us." Gavin states.
"That could explain it. When any of them wake up, interview them all. Get their side of the story."
"Of course, Dion."
"Dion, the guy you mentioned we bought in is awake. You said you knew him?" A young woman calls out. She has long blonde hair, but it's up in a bun right now. She looks a bit like Allie. That hurts... Universe doesn't want him to forget anytime soon what he did, clearly. That's karma for him.
As she comes closer, he sees she's missing a snake eating it's own tail ring that everyone else has. Did she lose hers? Was she in their apartment?
She better not have done anything to hurt Kiera!
Elliot gulps as his old friends come over. "Well, well. If it isn't our old friend, Elliot Coleman. Here to see our big beautiful headquarters.
How's it going?" Gavin smirks.
Elliot's speechless and closes his for a second when he feels Gavin slap him hard across the face.
"Elliot Colemam, why are you here? We haven't seen you in years, you never once called us after that house robbery.
What did you do to with your life? Go to university?" Dion enquires.
"Yeah, totally." Elliot laughs shyly.
"Hey, Nadine. Unlock his restraints, Elliot here is a guest. Elliot, come to our office, let's talk. We have a proposition for you.
You can probably tell we expanded our operations. We're nothing like we used to be." Dion monologues.
The young women who resembles Allie as Nadine undoes his restraints. He rubs his sore wrists and she places a hand on one, looking.
"It's bruised, but you'll be fine. Don't worry." She smiles, eyes gleaming. He gets an uneasy vibe from her. Something in her voice screams, 'fake'
"If it really hurts later, I can set you up with our doctor and my good friend, Bonnie. She could get you some ointment and some bandages." Nadine add's on, following behind Elliot who follows his ex-friends out of this infirmary.
On the way out, Elliot spies Maxis in the corner of a row, passed out on a bed. His skin is blue. His not dead, is he?
Then he feels Nadine's gaze burning into him, suspicious and he quickly looks away.
Shit, he almost blew it.
They lead him to the office, it's rather lush and comfy. He takes a seat behind a desk and Gavin stands beside Dion while Nadine takes a seat beside Elliot on one of the two chairs in front of the desk.
"Uh, so, something tells me we're not really about thieving anymore." Elliot whispers.
"No, those we're old the days." Dion says.
"So, what do you both do now-"
"Elliot, I think the question that needs to be asked is what we're you doing outside, with a group of strangers? You could have died for crying out loud!
Who told you about this place? We're you coming looking for us specifically or? Cause you're a long way from home, little brother. We immigrated here years ago."
"Little brother?" Nadine speaks up.
"Oh, no. I'm not actually related to them, that's just what they called me... I was 13 back at the time. We we're... We we're family back then in a way." Elliot explains.
"And we still are your family, Elliot." Dion add's on.
"Shit, you started young too..." Nadine says.
"My dad left and then mum left me, chased after the next man she could find who could provide if you know what I mean."
"I'm sorry to hear that, Elliot..." She responds.
"Um, so, what are you guys now? And who here exactly is Nadine?"
Dion sighs. "We're just going to come out with it. It will be blunt, Elliot. We're human traffickers now."
The room is silent.
"Did you say-"
"Human trafficking, that's what they said." Nadine repeats. "Wait, so, is it just selling... people? Or-" Elliot begins.
"Do not show him the operating theatre, Nadine May or I sware to god." Dion hisses at her. "Ever."
"This isn't Grade 9, like dissecting frogs science class we're talking about, is it?"
"Nope, not even close." Nadine answer, trying to keep a blank expression even though a part of her wants to burst out laughing.
"I'm think I'm going to be sick." Elliot says. "And I can get you, Bonnie if you need her." Nadine says, beginning to stand.
"No, no, no! It's fine! It's quite alright, you don't have to get her!" Elliot panics.
"Nadine, try not to scare Elliot if you can help it. He has anxiety. Do you still have anxiety?" He asks.
"Uh, yeah..." He trails off.
"Seen anyone about it even though it has been years?"
"No..."
"You don't health insurance...?"
"No..." Even though that is a lie, he does. Through the Military, he just doesn't utilize it. It doesn't interfere with his job, more his social relations and-
"Pease tell me you know how to cook more than a packet of ramen noodles at-least?" He begs.
"Uh..."
"My god." He says, shaking his head, hand holding it.
"Elliot, do you want to join us? We can get you on our insurance plan, we'll forge your documents.
You're my little brother, right?"
"I-I don't know."
"It's okay, take some time to think about it. You're welcome to stay here, you're family. You don't have to take an active role in our organization if you don't want.
Nadine, is there any free rooms in staff quarters?"
"Uh, no. No, there's not. I'll take a look at everyone's sleeping arrangements and see if I can't find some space for him somewhere."
"I don't care how you do it, just make it happen. Order another set of bunk beds if you have too, slap it on the company card." Dion snaps.
"Yes, sir."
"So, can I ask?"
"I'm one of the staff supervisors. I oversee the staff here who oversee our... Inventory collection."
"Inventory-"
"Well, they're not frogs." Nadine says, a tad snappy.
"Forget I asked." Elliot backtracks, eyes wide. "And then there is Dion who is the boss of the supervisors and there is the right hand, the co-leader, Gavin, obviously. Any more questions?"
"Yes, I'd like to go back and address what you we're doing with a bunch of wandering souls outside in the middle of a blizzard." Dion pushes.
"I-I met them back a few miles, at a service station-"
"Oh, we know that one. You're pretty far from the boarder. Did you sneak across?"
"Something like that."
"They lent me a jacket, I just wanted to stop freezing. I didn't know where I was going ultimately, I just had to uh- Get out of my country."
"Understandable, their whole regime can be rather eish."
You're one to talk... "So, what's going to happen to-"
"They are our property now."
"You're not going to kill them all are you?"
"Of course not, not all of them. Some people like slaves, Elliot. Not just backup spare parts."
"....."
"Nadine, can you get him some dry clothes and some food and work on finding him a bed? If you have to stick him with inventory souls for now, go ahead. But don't make it too long.
Have staff keep an eye out so that he doesn't get hurt. While we did ban butter knives, I still don't want to take any more chances with injuries and so forth around here."
"Yes, sir."
"Elliot, it was nice catching up with you. You get some food and sleep and we'll see you around. Take care, little brother." He says, and Nadine leads Elliot out of their office.
Nadine finds Elliot a spare collections uniform and gets him some food from the staff lunch break room, then leads him into one of the hallways that's collections are held in. "I'd get you a staff uniform, but I don't want to risk someone getting jumpy and get you in your sleep."
"I would rather not be jumped, yes."
"Alright, everyone! Who here has a spare bed in their cell- I mean, 'bedroom'?" Nadine calls out and Elliot sees all his friends he came in with.
Their silent.
"No volunteers? If I don't get a volunteer, one of you will be picked and can sleep in seclusion, it's cold in there during the night, trust me and Elliot here can have one of your beds in your bedroom, hmm?" She taunts with a smug expression.
Maxis raises his arm slowly. "You may speak, Soul #3062"
"There is an occupied bed in my bedroom."
"Oh, how great! Elliot, you're rooming with whatsies name here. It's lights out now all of you, into your cells.
I'll see you all in the morning, 5:30 a.m sharp."
And Nadine leaves, walking out a door backwards so she can make sure no one follows her. Elliot walks after Maxis into his cell and a staff member locks the door behind them.
It's solid and has a window, but the door for the window is up high so they can't see out and the room significantly darkens.
Elliot stands there, staring at Maxis who's sitting on one of the two bunk beds in their room. He looks angry and lies down, his back facing Elliot.
Not a word is spoken between them the whole evening. Elliot finds a seat on the opposite bunk bed to Maxis and brings his knees to his chest, a few tears falling.
Joining the mission was a mistake, a foolish stupid mistake and his very well just put himself and everyone else in grave danger.
---
"General Peterson."
"Yes, Vincent?" General Peterson responds, not looking back as he continues to stare through a pair of binoculars spying on the location, Thea led everyone into it... His dismayed that Elliot disobeyed him. No one even noticed Elliot had snuck himself into the undercover group.
"We have a problem."
"Make those two problems." The General says. "I'm sorry, what?" Vincent responds.
"Elliot snuck himself into the other group."
"I-Ah, you have got to be kidding me! Why is he being so stupid and reckless lately?! His not normally like this.
Well, he better hope he doesn't get himself and anyone else killed. While we can go in guns blazing like later planned, you didn't want us to do that till a month or two later."
"Indeed. So, what's the other bad news?"
"Interpol decided to get back to us, it's ironic, not a laughing matter timing and we're in the country the report is from."
"What do you mean? I didn't make a request outside the country for any information-"
"You did two years ago."
"...Is this about Kiera Bailey?"
"Yes."
"So, Interpol has now confirmed her identity? We had her sitting around with us the whole time.
This is bad..."
"Us babysitting her you mean." Vincent snickers. "Vincent." Peterson glares.
"Sorry, Sir."
"So, what did we learn on her? Because all she ever gave us was her name and never anything else. But I didn't want to see her thrown into a detention centre for years so I pulled strings to get her permission to be allowed to stay in our country till if Interpol ever identified her."
"Her name is Kiera Bailey, she's from Vancouver, here in Canada and was reported missing on the 5th of July, 50XX which was a Monday by Happy Pizza which is chain company when she didn't show up for work. She was last seen by them on Friday, the 2nd of July, she worked full time. She had been working there for a year.
She had an apartment which was investigated, and there was no sign she had been there so she likely vanished between leaving work and never made it home."
"And anything else?"
"Uh, yes... She aged out of Vancouvers foster care system at 19."
"Oh... So, she doesn't have family? No one was looking for her?"
"Doesn't seem so the only people to report her missing was going to be her workplace."
"Darn, that's horrible. Some questions still remain, how did she make it out of Canada with no ID, across their boarder, across our boarder undetected the U.S, to us?"
Why not just report to a police station here?"
"I don't know, Sir."
"That was rhetorical, Vincent. I'm willing to bet whoever broke into our base and is now in that complex is the reason and answer to Kiera vanishing, showing up and then vanishing again.
Maxis and Elliot's place was trashed."
"So, what do we do now?"
"Uh, I'll male some calls. Night is setting in so we'll need to pull back and set up camp. There is nothing more we can do here now till morning when we stakeout again.
Hope information on what is going on out here is reason enough not to get us in trouble. I did get permission from lower down the chain, but not exactly higher up the chain as this was kind of an emergency...
This is going to become a dual crime case between two nations. Hopefully we can reach an agreement and they will work with us rather than against us..."199Please respect copyright.PENANA9JummutAs3
