III
He angrily opened a can of beer and drank as much of it as he could while what had happened just mere hours ago replayed in his mind.
Over
and over
and over
and over
until—
He felt his anger build up to the point where he couldn't contain it any longer, causing him to throw the can across the room where it hit a wall and beer splashed onto the white paint.
As he watched the beer trailing down the wall, he heard his phone vibrate from where it lay on the counter before him. He looked at the phone and contemplated whether or not to look at it as his anger continued to linger.
He breathed in and out several times to calm down. And when he felt as if he had calmed down enough, he picked up his phone to find a text from his mother:
Call me when you see this.
He immediately dialed his mother's number and waited for her to answer.
"Marc."
"Hi mom," he said to her as he smiled to keep his anger from being reflected in his voice, "what's up?"
"Your father's birthday. Don't tell me you forgot about that," she told him. He felt his hand ball into a fist as he remembered the event.
"You remember what he said right?" his mother asked.
For some reason, his father had demanded for him to bring a date to the birthday.
Knowing that he had made an oath to never fall in love again after what had happened in his past, he had avoided dating as much as he could. But when his father had made that demand, stating it as his dying wish, he'd had no choice but to attempt to fulfill that wish before he lost his father.
"Marc are you listening?" he heard his mother faintly say.
"Yeah," he told her.
"I hope you'll grant your father his wish," his mother said solemnly before saying goodbye to him and hanging up.
He punched the wall beside him as his frustration built.
Not only did he have to deal with the resurfacing memories that came with meeting her again but he also had his father's dying wish to think about.
His phone vibrated then, causing him to look at the message that he had received:
I know that this is well overdue
But I really am sorry for what I did back then.
And I know that I can't ask for your forgiveness
But I wish you would give me the chance to at least try to make it up to you.
If you're willing to let me make it up to you,
You'll meet me at the same cafe at 1300 tomorrow.
