After the argument
He walked outside to the water fountain which had been turned off for the winter. He stared at the sculpture in the middle as he breathed heavily, adrenaline coursing through his veins.
At last, he had finally told her how he felt after all these years;
He couldn't be any happier.
But why did he feel a nagging pain somewhere deep in his heart?
Did he regret telling her how he felt?
He shook his head at the thought.
Why would he regret telling her how he actually felt. That would only happen if he had...
Started to like her.
In that moment, he remember what his father had said just moments before,
"I don't know who this woman is that has finally melted that frozen heart of yours but whoever she is, hold her and keep her close; don't let her go because she's a keeper."
In the process of using her, had his heart started to open up to her?
The feeling of someone touching his shoulder caused him to turn around to find his mother standing beside him as she placed a hand on his shoulder. She smiled at him.
"That girl you brought, I feel like I've met her before," his mother said. He took in a deep breath and let it out.
"We went to school together; elementary and high school."
"Ah," his mother said simply.
There was a moment of silence before she spoke again,
"I get the feeling that you two have a history that I don't know about."
He didn't say anything.
"Marc, I don't know what happened between the two of you but I just saw her run out of the banquet hall crying. I don't know where she went but she didn't have a jacket on as she ran out of the door. And if she went outside, she could be in danger."
He didn't say anything to his mother as he suddenly turned around, feeling the urge to find her before anything bad happened to her. He didn't have the time to wonder why he was suddenly on high alert but he knew that he had to find her.
He ran towards the coat room and took his jacket and scarf. Without putting them on, he ran outside and towards the garden, hoping that she had gone there.
To his relief, he found her sitting on a bench as she cried, shivering from the cold. He ran to her and placed his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. From the corner of his eyes, he saw her stand up.
"Did you not finish what you were saying? Was there something else you had to tell me?" she asked him, tears streaming down her face.
He looked up to find her mascara running down her cheeks from her tears. Her lipstick was now smudged and the perfect curls of her hair were no longer perfect.
Without saying anything, he placed his jacket around her shoulders.
"Tell me what you have to say and leave before I feel any worse than I already do."
Again, he said nothing.
He wrapped his red scarf around her, not giving much thought to her as he tied a knot to keep the warmth in.
He didn't look into her eyes as his hands dropped to his sides. He took a step back and attempted to turn around to walk away but he froze when he heard her voice.
"Do you know why I did that, you idiot?!" she yelled at him as tears streamed down her face once again.
He didn't say anything.
"Do you know why I said those words to you all those years ago?!" she asked, her hand balling into a fist.
He turned around at that time and looked at her, his face still emotionless.
"It was because I liked you too okay?"
He still didn't say anything.
"I was twelve and stupid! All I wanted to do was fit in but how could I when I had the biggest crush on the boy that everyone in the class called a loser? How could I admit how I felt when all I could think about was making friends as the new girl? I know that what I did was stupid but I didn't think it affected you as much as it affected me. I went through all these years wondering what happened to you and hoping that you didn't feel as awful as I did after saying those things to you! And even now, knowing that I don't deserve to have feelings for you, I'm still in love with you!"
