Kyra and Evan sat on the couch, the air between them thick with disbelief.
"A FUCKING METH LAB? ARE YOU SHITTING ME?! Do these thick thighs look like they belong to a meth head?" Kyra shot back, her voice rising.
"Shhh! Keep it down!" Evan urged, casting a furtive glance toward the kitchen.
"Did you say something, honey?" Evan's mom hollered from the other room, her tone tinged with curiosity.
"No, Mom, just sneezed," Evan lied, his heart pounding as he felt the weight of deception settle over him.
"They're lying, babe! They're making us out to be criminals!" Kyra's voice trembled, a hint of panic creeping in.
"I know... I know..." Evan replied, forcing calm through clenched teeth. The clock ticked loudly in his ears, each second amplifying his anxiety.
"Fuck, what are we going to do, Evan?" Kyra's eyes widened, and he could see the beginnings of a panic attack brewing.
"I don't know, babe," he admitted, feeling helpless. "But we'll figure this out."
"HOW?! My family, my friends... They're all going to think-" Her voice faltered, and Evan could see the fear rising in her.
"Babe... look at me," he said softly, cupping her face in his hands. "I'm going to handle this. We're going to handle this. I promise. We got this."
Her lips trembled, but she nodded. "We're going to make those motherfuckers pay. Did we add rocket launchers to Robot Buddy?" she said, only half joking
"I'm not sure." he paused as his stomach started tying itself in knots.
Simultaneously, their stomachs rumbled loudly, cutting through the tension like a knife. The hunger, sharp and insistent, overpowered their fear. It suddenly dawned on them that they hadn't eaten in nearly two days.
"Let's just eat and think this through," Evan suggested, his mind racing. "After we're done, we can go upstairs, and maybe Robot Buddy can help us."
Kyra nodded, grabbing a huge spoonful of mac and cheese. With her mouth full, she asked, "Are you going to tell your mom?"
"I... I was thinking about it. But I don't think I should. I don't want to drag her into this," he said, his heart racing at the thought of his mom getting involved. "It's probably best to leave her in the dark. I don't want Clark after her, too. Plus, you know how religious she is; she'd think this power is from the devil or something."
"What if it is?" Kyra shot back, a smirk creeping onto her face.
"IT'S NOT!" Evan exclaimed, a childlike defensiveness creeping into his voice. "It's a scientific thing, not spiritual."
"Ooohhhh scieeeennnce, okay, Mr. Bill Nye," Kyra teased playfully.
"BILL BILL BILL BILL!" they both heard Robot Buddy singing from upstairs, the cheerful tone contrasting sharply with their anxiety.
They exchanged a food-filled smile, the humor momentarily lightening the heavy atmosphere.
After they finished their meal, they both sat in silence, unable to look at their plates. Evan took a deep breath, then told Kyra, "I'm heading to the kitchen; my mom said she needs to talk to me."
"Okay, I'll wait here for you, tell her I said thank you." she replied, her voice quieter now.
As Evan walked toward the kitchen, Essiya ambled past with a sly grin. "Is your girlfriend still in there? I've got something to ask her," he said, rubbing his hands together with mischievous delight.
"Essiya, if you embarrass me, I swear I'm going to give you a swirly," Evan warned, rolling his eyes.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, homie. I got this big pimpin'," Essiya replied, trying to sound cool as he strutted away, a ridiculous limp accentuating his swagger.
Shaking his head, Evan entered the kitchen and was greeted by his mom.
"Hey, Ebby! Did you enjoy your meal?" she asked cheerfully, a nickname that once annoyed him now just brings him slight comfort.
"Yes, it was delicious. Kyra says thank you," he replied, forcing a smile to mask his inner turmoil.
"Good! So, how was your trip? Even though it was shorter than expected..." she continued.
"Yeah," he chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his head, desperately trying to push away the dread creeping over him. "Who would have expected a fallen rock coming out of the sky would ruin my vacation?"
"Why did you leave just because of a comet?" his mom asked, her brows furrowing in confusion.
"Well," he hesitated, weighing the consequences of his words. "It fell in Kyra's backyard... started a fire."
"OH LORD! THAT WAS KYRA'S HOUSE?! Oh, thank goodness God protected you with His angels! I knew it was her neighborhood, but I didn't know it was specifically her house!" She was chattering now, completely unaware of the ice solidifying in his veins. "I happened to see it on the news the day it happened; I just didn't quite connect the dots."
Evan's heart raced, his mind spiraling.
Did she see what the news said today? Is that what this conversation is about?
He barely heard her next words, a dull roar filling his ears.
"I'm glad you're safe, honey,"
"Thanks for praying for my mom," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper.
"You're welcome, sweetheart. So, there's something I have to tell you, honey..."
Evan felt his pulse quicken as her tone shifted.
What was it? Did she see the news alert about him and kyra?
"I know, Evan. I know why you did it."
His blood ran cold, freezing him in place. "MOM, I SWEAR IT'S NOT WHAT THEY SAID! I WOULD NEVER DO THAT! I CAN'T TELL YOU WHAT OR WHY BUT IT'S NOT WHAT THEY SAY!"
Panic laced his voice, rising into a half-yell as the tears welled in his eyes. He had to convince her. It wasn't what the news portrayed. He mentally cursed himself for not being able to share the truth, all to shield her from danger.
Evan's mother looked at him, her eyes filled with a mix of concern and surprise. "H-honey, calm down... it's... it's okay, baby," she said, her voice softening as she tried to reassure him. "I'm just trying to say it's okay that you didn't answer your phone when I called. I know it was because you weren't ready to hear the news about your brother. You were probably just scared and avoided it as long as you could. I didn't want to ruin you and Kyra's vacation with the possibility of bad news. But what were you talking about? You can't tell me what? What did they say? Who are 'they'?"
Evan felt a wave of heat flood his face, his cheeks turning crimson. He could feel his pulse quicken, each beat echoing the turmoil inside his head. "Oh... I... no... no, I... uh... 'they,' as in our family," he stammered, the words tripping over themselves as he struggled to find solid ground. His mind raced, not only from the shock of realizing his mother wasn't referencing the news he was dreading but also from the fear of her thinking he had ignored her calls out of selfishness. The truth gnawed at him-he had already been told, by Clark, no less.
"Then why didn't you answer?" she asked, her voice gentle yet probing, searching for understanding.
Evan's heart hammered in his chest, his mind a tangled mess of excuses and confessions. He could feel the weight of her expectation pressing down on him, demanding honesty. "I... umm... I was... um..." He hesitated, the truth burning on the tip of his tongue. "WAS HAVING SEX," he blurted out, the words escaping louder than he intended, echoing in the silence that followed.
The confession hung in the air, heavy and awkward. Evan's thoughts spiraled in a chaotic dance of regret and embarrassment. "Why did I say that? Why didn't I just say the comet?" he screamed internally, cringing at the admission.
Evan's mother was momentarily flustered, her composure slipping. "Oh... I... ugh... yeah... um, you are an adult after all," she managed, her voice tinged with awkward acceptance. She cleared her throat, gathering her thoughts. "I got the call back about Donovan."
Evan's gaze fell to the floor, his heart sinking. He knew what the news would be, but he forced himself to feign ignorance. "And... what's the news?" he asked, his voice steady despite the turmoil within.
His mother hesitated, glancing past him to the doorway, ensuring their privacy. "Your brother... needed spinal surgery. And he's awake now," she said, her voice faltering. The room seemed to shrink around them, the air thick with unspoken fears. "He's paralyzed from the neck down... it's really bad, honey," she added, tears spilling over as she finally let the weight of the news break her composure.
Evan felt a storm of emotions surge within him-shock, anger, guilt-all crashing against the walls of his carefully maintained facade. He despised Clark for his role in Donovan's injury, yet he had to bury his resentment for the sake of his mother's fragility. "Oh God," he exclaimed, standing abruptly. He moved to embrace his mother, his arms wrapping around her in a gesture of support. "I can't believe it," he murmured, allowing himself to cry, the tears both genuine and cathartic. The reality he already knew now felt raw and immediate.
"Does Essiya know?" Evan asked, his voice thick with emotion.
"No, I haven't told him yet. I'm going to tell him tomorrow before we go for the visit. I was hoping you would come," she replied, her eyes searching his face for reassurance.
"Of course, Mom," Evan promised, his mind racing with the implications of the visit. Would he be able to maintain his composure in front of Essiya? Could he hide the truth of Clark's involvement?
His mother sighed, her voice a mix of relief and desperation. "Oh God, Evan. I don't know what has gotten into you since you left, but I thank you for being much more supportive. I really need you, sweetheart. Essiya needs you, Donovan needs you... we all need you."
Evan felt the weight of her words settle heavily on his shoulders, the responsibility pressing down like a physical force. "I'm here, Mom. I always will be," he assured her, though inside he wondered how long he could carry the burden of secrets and expectations.
As Kyra lounged on the couch, trying to shake off the tension from earlier, the door swung open, and Essiya sauntered in, a mischievous grin plastered on his face.
"Hey hot momma, how you doin'?" he exclaimed, resting one arm on the couch and lifting one leg, striking a pose like a wannabe Casanova. He wiggled his eyebrows up and down, clearly reveling in his own ridiculousness.
Kyra raised an eyebrow, trying to suppress a giggle. "Oh, nice to meet you, Mr. Slick. Evan told me about you, Essiya."
"Hope it was nothing but good things. You know, handsome, charming... money-I mean, let's just say my allowance could buy a few candy bars," he boasted, puffing his chest out like he was the king of the world. **"Just wait till she hears about my straight A's. Who needs a job when you've got grades?"**
"Oo la!" Tara chimed in, waving her hand in front of her face theatrically as if she was fanning herself from a sudden heatwave. **"Did it just get warm in here, or is it just Essiya?"**
Essiya tried to act casual, looking away like he was too cool for school. "So, uh... Evan told me you got a sister. She look anything like you? 'Cause if so..." He chuckled, leaning back, "let's just say I ain't got no problem keeping it in the family, ya dig?"
Kyra, genuinely taken aback, couldn't help but laugh. **"Wow, this guy's got all the smoothness of a rock. But I'll play along."** "Well yes, in fact, I do."
"And what's this fine young lady's name?" Essiya leaned in, anticipation gleaming in his eyes.
"It's shaee."
"OOO, shea, shea, shea! I like the way that sounds rolling off the tongue-just right, i bet she smell like shea butter too huh?? Mhm, shea gonna be my bae, mhm, that's right." he crooned, as if he was auditioning for a cheesy rom-com.
Kyra laughed, feeling the ridiculous energy fill the room. "Well, I'm sorry, little man, but she's too old for you. She's my older sister."
"Oh, it ain't no thang' but a chicken wang, suga'! Age ain't nothin' but a number, lil' momma!" His confidence was astonishingly absurd.
"Yeah, and so is jail time if you keep it up!" she shot back, half-laughing.
"Hey, you just give her this," Essiya said smoothly, handing her a piece of crumpled paper with a phone number scrawled in a decidedly non-adult color-crayon. **"Ain't nobody gotta know."** He sauntered away, swaggering like he just invented charm.
Kyra tried her best to hold back her laughter. "Aye aye, sir!"
Essiya disappeared into the kitchen, and just as Evan walked out, he caught sight of his friend. "What did you do?"
"Hey playa, don't worry! Everything's fiiine!" Essiya replied, waving his hand casually as if he hadn't just proposed a romantic scheme that could implode like a poorly constructed Jenga tower. "Just making sure we keep it in the family, ya feel me?"
Evan shook his head, half-laughing, half-dreading the news that awaited him tomorrow. "Damn man, I could learn a thing or two from you about talking to the ladies."
"Maybe one day, you'll learn, lil' man." Essiya strode off with a bounce in his step, like he was the star of the show.
As Evan strolled back toward Kyra, he couldn't help but grin. "So, you finally met Essiya. He was dying to meet you."
Kyra chuckled, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I think he was dying more to meet my sister than me."
"Oh yea, I bet.. but i think that's enough fun. Let's head back upstairs and handle business," Evan said, adopting a serious tone.
"Right behind you," Kyra replied, her voice still tinged with laughter as they made their way back upstairs.
As they opened the door to Evan's room, they were greeted by Robot Buddy, who floated there with his metallic arms crossed and an exaggerated smirk across his screen. "So, couldn't stop yourself from bringing up sex again to your mom, huh?" he quipped, his tone a mix of teasing and mock seriousness.
Kyra's eyes widened, and she burst out, "Again?!? Evan!"
"What?! You heard that?" Evan's face turned a shade of crimson, and he ran a hand through his hair, desperately trying to regain some composure. Look, I was under pressure, okay?!"
"You could've just said 'the meteor,'" Robot Buddy chimed in, as if solving an unsolvable riddle.
"I KNOOOW, OKAY??? Let's just move on!" Evan was practically squirming now, wishing the floor would open up and swallow him whole.
"Hey, you don't have to tell me twice. Between you constantly bringing up sex to your mom and your nephew trying to get Kyra's sister arrested for unlawful sexual conduct, my wires almost fried from all the cringe!" Robot Buddy joked, the screen on his chest flashing a little emoji with wide eyes, capturing the horror of the situation perfectly.
Evan shot him an annoyed look. "I said enough."
"Maybe you should use your powers to make yourself less awkward, right, Kyra?" Robot Buddy letting out a robotic giggled, playing the perfect sidekick while Evan simmered.
With a hand over her mouth, Kyra stifled another laugh, her eyes sparkling. "I'm not sure any amount of superpower can save him from himself!"
"Look, I don't want to use my powers in any way that changes who I am," Evan replied, crossing his arms defensively, standing as tall as he could. "I'm fine just being awkward."
"Well, some sacrifices are worth it, RIGHT, Kyra?" Robot Buddy making a holding in laughing face emoji fly across his screen.
Kyra couldn't hold it back anymore-she burst into uncontrollable laughter, nearly doubling over. "This is way too entertaining!"
"I said enough!" Evan raised his voice, flustered, feeling outnumbered by the laughter surrounding him.
"Okay, okay..." Robot Buddy hesitated, his circuits seemingly processing the next joke. "Bill Nye!"
Kyra and Robot Buddy erupted into a fit of laughter, the room echoing with their triumphant version of the jingle, "BILL, BILL, BILL, BILL!" They belted it out like a true chorus, drowning out Evan's attempts to save face.
"Ugh," Evan groaned dramatically, rolling his eyes as he walked past them to his bed, his cheeks still hot with embarrassment. "Look, we need to get down to business, alright guys?"
"Science guy to businessman, huh?" Robot Buddy murmured, his digital eyes flickering.
Evan shot him a glare, irritation threading through his expression.
In response, Robot Buddy displayed a meme of a man holding his hands up as if saying, Whoa, sorry bro. "I sense you're feeling stressed."
"Wow, you must be a real standout detective," Evan replied, rolling his eyes. "You have to be state-of-the-art technology to deduce that."
Robot Buddy rubbed the back of his head, appearing sheepish. "Yeah, I deserve that.
Evan's expression turned serious as he glanced at Robot Buddy, his mind churning with unspoken worries. "Look, there are some things we need to figure out," he said with a hint of urgency.
Robot Buddy, ever eager to assist, responded, "I'd love to help. But when you created me, you only gave me a brief idea of the situation we're in. Would you like to fill me in on the full scale?"
Evan sighed, preparing himself for the lengthy explanation ahead. "It's a long story, but here goes..."
As he delved into the details, Robot Buddy interrupted, its sensors keenly attuned to the nuances of Evan's speech. "Wait, I feel as though you're leaving out some minor details."
Evan paused, taken aback. "How so?" he asked, genuinely puzzled.
"It's a combination of your speech patterns and your tendency to jump from one scenario to the next," Robot Buddy explained. "It's not your fault-it's a mixture of human emotions and, well, the imperfection of human memory. For me to serve you to the fullest extent, I need a clearer picture."
Evan leaned in, intrigued. "Okay, how do you suggest we do that?"
"A memory read," Robot Buddy stated with confidence.
"What?" Evan replied, surprise evident in his voice.
"When you and Kyra created me, you designed me with a myriad of abilities, one being a connection to you-emotionally. I can sense in great detail what emotions you are feeling and when you're in danger. Ensuring your safety is my primary function. Plus, I'm not just a normal robot. I was made using your special power, with capabilities far beyond any of Earth's technology. These capabilities are designed to serve you, and only you."
Kyra, sitting nearby, chimed in with a teasing smile. "Hey, what about me?"
Robot Buddy responded with a playful tone, letting an emoji cross its screen-a blushing face with a finger to its lips. "Yes, you too, Kyra! After all, it was your idea to make me cute."
"It will only take a second," Robot Buddy assured them.
Evan hesitated, then relented, a touch of caution in his voice. "Alright, sure. But don't you go peeking around in places you don't belong."
"Of course not, Evan," Robot Buddy replied, its tone carrying a hint of pride.
Floating over, Robot Buddy extended a long silver tube from the back of its head, gently resting it against Evan's. A slight buzz tingled through Evan's mind, and after a few seconds, Robot Buddy retracted the device.
"Whoa, momma, this is deep!" Robot Buddy exclaimed, processing the influx of information.
Evan shook his head, still absorbing the revelations. "Yeah, you ain't kidding."
Turning to Kyra, Robot Buddy asked, "May I do you next?"
Kyra nodded, smiling warmly. "Why, I'd be honored."
Repeating the process, Robot Buddy connected the tube to Kyra. After a moment, it declared, "Yup, as I suspected."
"What?" Evan asked, curiosity piqued.
"Deep doo-doo. Knee-deep, in fact," Robot Buddy noted with dramatic flair.
Evan rolled his eyes, a wry smile tugging at his lips. "Wow, very informative."
"But don't worry! This added information definitely helps, especially experiencing it from both perspectives. I have to say, those detectives are persistent."
Evan's brow furrowed with concern. "Yeah, I don't know how they found us so fast."
Robot Buddy chirped in with a straightforward answer. "Well, that's simple. You used your credit card, helping them easily track your whereabouts."
Evan slapped his forehead in frustration, feeling a wave of realization wash over him. "Fuuuck... no shit. Damn it, this is the type of stuff I need you for."
"And that's why I'm here, Evan. No worries!" Robot Buddy reassured him.
"Based on my calculations," Robot Buddy began, its voice steady and analytical, "you teleported just over 1,103.8 miles from Ohio to Florida. This gives you some time before they catch up, but returning to your home wasn't the wisest choice. It's likely one of the first places they'll look, if they haven't already. I haven't detected any indication that your mother was informed or that any agents have knocked on her door."
Evan's stomach twisted with dread. "No, she hasn't told me anything," he mumbled, his mind racing with the implications.
Robot Buddy continued, its tone factual yet urgent. "If I were to give you a rough estimate, I'd say you have less than 18 hours."
"What?! That's it?!" Evan's voice rose in alarm, the weight of the situation pressing down on him like a vice.
"Yes, sadly," Robot Buddy confirmed. "I would recommend you and Kyra get a move on."
Evan's heart sank. "Fuck, I was supposed to go with my mom tomorrow to visit my brother," he said, frustration and despair mingling in his voice.
Robot Buddy paused, its next words carefully chosen. "Please don't take this as me being cold. I can't imagine how hard this must be. But for the safety of not only yourself, but your mother, brother, nephew, and Kyra, I wouldn't recommend going. They would surely intercept you before you reach the hospital."
"I suggest you and Kyra try to get a good night's sleep and weigh your options," Robot Buddy advised, its tone gentle yet firm. "I sense that you two haven't slept in about two days. For your bodies to function at their fullest capacity, rest is essential. Tomorrow morning, you can make your decision. I'll keep watch and inform you if there are any drastic changes in my constellation."
"Yeah, you're right. Thanks, Robot Buddy," Evan replied, the exhaustion evident in his voice.
Kyra gently rubbed Evan's shoulder, offering comfort. "I'm sorry, babe. I just wish I could do more to help."
Evan turned to her, a soft smile on his lips. "You are helping me. Just being right here next to me... I love you."
"I love you too," Kyra whispered, leaning in to kiss him. Robot Buddy played an "aww" sound effect, adding a touch of light-heartedness as it settled softly on Evan's computer table, dimming its lights to create a tranquil atmosphere for sleep.
Despite the calm, Evan and Kyra found themselves tossing and turning, sleep eluding them. Kyra broke the silence, her voice tinged with playful desperation. "Can you, like, knock me out with your powers, Evan? I give you permission."
"Umm, I..." Evan hesitated, not entirely comfortable with the idea.
Before Evan could find his words, Robot Buddy interjected. "No worries, Evan. Save your strength. I can handle this. If you want, Kyra, I can put you into automatic NREM sleep."
"Don't you mean REM sleep?" Kyra inquired, curious.
"No," Robot Buddy replied patiently. "REM, which stands for Rapid Eye Movement sleep, is a phase characterized by rapid eye movements, increased brain activity, and where most dreams occur, along with temporary paralysis of the body. NREM, or Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep, comprises the first three stages of sleep and is marked by slowing brain waves, breathing, and heart rate, with muscles being relaxed and little to no eye movement. I can place you directly into stage 3, the deepest stage of sleep."
"Yeah, I totally understand everything you just said," Kyra responded, feigning comprehension with a smile. "Go ahead and do that."
Robot Buddy hovered over her, extending a silver tube to her head. Within moments, Kyra was softly snoring, a peaceful expression on her face.
"You next, Evan?" Robot Buddy offered.
"Yeah, sure. Why not?" Evan agreed, a hint of anticipation in his voice.
As Robot Buddy hovered over, preparing to connect the tube, it leaned in close and whispered, "Hey, buddy. I just wanted to let you know, when you got your power and the universe seemed to destroy itself... that wasn't you. Or because of the power you gained."
"Wha-how? How do you know? I thought it was my subconscious," Evan stammered, surprise flickering in his eyes.
"Well, when I accessed your memory, I replayed that moment about three million four hundred thousand eight hundred and sixty-six and a half times...
"And a half huh? What was the half for?"
"Just to make sure. And nothing about your power or your subconscious triggered that."
"Then what was it?" Evan asked, his voice a mix of relief and confusion.
"I don't have that answer yet, but I'm ninety-three point eight percent sure it wasn't you," Robot Buddy assured him.
"Why are you telling me this?" Evan asked, his curiosity piqued.
"Every time you use your power, whether in a dire situation or just chilling, lighting a doobie for Kyra, you're always scared that something will go awry because of that moment when you got your power. I'm telling you this because in the future, you're going to have to use your power a lot more. These agents, these interdimensional beings... you're going to have to stop running at some point. And when you do, I want you to know... YOU are in control of your power. Your power is not in control of you. Especially since you put those dampeners on your power. What's on smart I might add. Very Bill Nye of you. Either way, you have nothing to worry about Evan. You create; you don't destroy."
Evan looked up at Robot Buddy, who flashed a meme of a funny-looking dog smiling warmly. A chuckle escaped Evan's lips. "T-thank you... I think I really needed to hear that."
"No need to think. That's what I'm here for. I know you needed to hear it." And with that, Robot Buddy gently zapped Evan into a peaceful sleep before he could respond.
