धीरु एक शांत सा लड़का था जो पहाड़ों की तलहटी में बसे एक छोटे से गांव में रहता था, गांव का नाम था पनघटपुर। वहां की वादियाँ जितनी हसीन थीं, उतनी ही रहस्यमयी भी थीं। गाँव के ठीक ऊपर एक पुराना किला था—“राजगढ़ हवेली”—जिसके बारे में लोगों का मानना था कि वहां आत्माओं का वास है, और रात के समय वहां कोई नहीं जाता था। पर धीरु थोड़ा अलग था, वह डर को चुनौती देना जानता था, और शायद इसलिए ही वह गांव में सबका चहेता भी था। एक दिन गांव में एक लड़की आई—भूमि। वह शहर से आई थी, उसकी आंखों में कुछ सवाल थे और दिल में दर्द, जो उसके चेहरे पर साफ झलकता था। वह अपने बीते कल से भागी थी, एक ऐसे सच से जिसे वो किसी को बताना नहीं चाहती थी।

धीरु और भूमि की मुलाकात गांव की नदी के किनारे हुई, जहां भूमि अकेली बैठी हुई थी और कुछ सोच रही थी। धीरु ने उसके पास जाकर धीरे से पूछा, “सब ठीक है?” भूमि ने पहले कुछ नहीं कहा, फिर आंखें झुकाकर बस इतना कहा, “शायद कुछ भी ठीक नहीं है।” इसके बाद दोनों की मुलाकातें बढ़ने लगीं, धीरु के अंदर की मासूमियत भूमि को धीरे-धीरे खींचने लगी। धीरु ने पहली बार किसी को उस रहस्यमयी हवेली के बारे में इतनी दिलचस्पी लेते देखा। भूमि बार-बार हवेली के पास जाती थी जैसे वहां कुछ उसे बुला रहा हो। धीरु ने एक दिन पूछ ही लिया, “क्या है वहां जो तुम्हें बार-बार खींचता है?” भूमि ने कहा, “मुझे नहीं पता, पर लगता है जैसे वहां मेरा कोई इंतज़ार कर रहा है।”

धीरे-धीरे धीरु और भूमि एक-दूसरे के बेहद करीब आ गए। पहली बार दोनों ने एक-दूसरे की आंखों में वो मोहब्बत देखी थी, जो बिना कहे सब कुछ कह जाती है। पर जिस रात दोनों ने हवेली की ओर जाने का फैसला किया, उसी रात से उनकी दुनिया बदल गई। वो रात अमावस की थी, हवाओं में सिहरन थी और पूरी हवेली अजीब सी चमक से जगर-मगर कर रही थी। धीरु ने भूमि का हाथ थामा और कहा, “डरो मत, मैं तुम्हारे साथ हूं।” दोनों जब हवेली के अंदर पहुंचे तो वहां का सन्नाटा चीख रहा था। दीवारों पर उकेरे गए चेहरे जैसे उन्हें घूर रहे हों। अचानक हवेली के अंदर का दरवाजा बंद हो गया और अजीब सी फुसफुसाहट सुनाई देने लगी। भूमि कांपने लगी और धीरु ने उसे अपने सीने से लगा लिया। पहली बार भूमि ने किसी के सीने में खुद को सुरक्षित महसूस किया।

पर ये सुरक्षा कुछ पलों की थी, हवेली के अंदर एक पुरानी आत्मा बसी थी—चंद्रिका, जो कभी इसी हवेली की राजकुमारी थी। उसकी आत्मा अब भी इस हवेली में भटक रही थी क्योंकि उसकी प्रेम कहानी अधूरी रह गई थी। चंद्रिका की आत्मा ने भूमि के अंदर प्रवेश कर लिया था। धीरु को तब अहसास हुआ जब भूमि की आंखें लाल होने लगीं, उसकी आवाज़ बदलने लगी। चंद्रिका अब भूमि के ज़रिए अपने अधूरे इश्क को पूरा करना चाहती थी और उसके लिए उसने धीरु को चुना था।

चंद्रिका की आत्मा भूमि की देह में रहकर धीरु से प्यार जताने लगी। धीरु हैरान था कि उसकी भूमि कहां गई, जो अब सामने है वो उसकी भूमि नहीं कोई और है। पर चंद्रिका के प्यार में एक ऐसी पीड़ा थी जो धीरु को बांधे जा रही थी। धीरु ने एक रात भूमि से पूछा, “क्या तुम वही हो जिससे मैं प्यार करता हूं?” भूमि मुस्कुराई पर उसकी मुस्कान में दर्द था, और आंखों में खून। उसने कहा, “मैं हूं, पर अब मैं अकेली नहीं हूं।”

धीरु ने फैसला किया कि वह भूमि को वापस लाएगा, चाहे उसे खुद को दांव पर क्यों न लगाना पड़े। वह गांव के एक तांत्रिक बाबा के पास गया जिन्होंने कहा, “भूमि अब आधी मरी हुई है, और आधी ज़िंदा। अगर तूने उसकी आत्मा को मुक्त न किया, तो न वो तेरी रहेगी, न कोई और।” बाबा ने धीरु को एक विशेष रुद्राक्ष माला दी और कहा कि हवेली में जाकर चंद्रिका की अधूरी कहानी को जानना होगा।

धीरु ने हवेली जाकर चंद्रिका की आत्मा से बात की। उसने कहा, “तेरा प्यार अधूरा था, लेकिन मैं किसी और से प्यार करता हूं। भूमि तुझसे बेगुनाह है, उसे छोड़ दे।” चंद्रिका की आत्मा चीखी, “मुझे भी तो किसी ने छोड़ा था, मैं क्यों किसी को छोड़ूं?” धीरु ने माला भूमि के गले में डाली और मंत्र पढ़े, जिससे चंद्रिका तड़पने लगी। उसकी चीखें हवेली की दीवारों को कंपा रही थीं। अंततः चंद्रिका की आत्मा धुएं में बदलकर हवेली की दीवारों में समा गई।

भूमि अब धीरे-धीरे होश में आई, पर उसका शरीर बेहद थक चुका था। धीरु ने उसे उठाकर नदी किनारे ले गया, जहां पहली बार उनकी मुलाकात हुई थी। वहीं धीरु ने भूमि का हाथ पकड़कर कहा, “अब मैं तुम्हें कभी खोने नहीं दूंगा।” भूमि की आंखों में आंसू थे और धीरु की आंखों में प्यार। उन्होंने पहली बार वहीं अपने प्यार का इज़हार किया। वो रात प्रेम की थी, डर के खत्म होने की थी।

पर कहानी यहीं खत्म नहीं होती। चंद्रिका की आत्मा अभी पूरी तरह शांत नहीं हुई थी। हर पूर्णिमा की रात जब हवेली में दीपक अपने आप जलते हैं, हवाओं में सरसराहट होती है, तो गांव के लोग कहते हैं कि चंद्रिका फिर से अपने प्रेम की परछाई ढूंढ़ती है। पर धीरु और भूमि ने गांव छोड़ दिया, किसी और शहर में बस गए जहां सिर्फ उनका प्यार था, और कोई साया नहीं। पर कभी-कभी भूमि को अब भी अंधेरे में कोई पुकारता है, और धीरु बस उसकी आंखों में देखकर कहता है, “मैं हूं न, कुछ नहीं होगा।”

इस डर और प्यार की मिली-जुली कहानी में जो बचा वो था प्यार, और जो रह गया वो था एक अधूरी आत्मा की तड़प। चंद्रिका की तरह दुनिया में कई अधूरी कहानियां हवाओं में तैरती हैं—जो किसी की खुशबू में घुलकर रह जाती हैं।
