As a little girl, a shoe box

Taught me of the inevitable.

It weighed heavily in my arms,

new shoes left behind

on the busy street for any passerby

As brave as you were.

Brave enough to cross the hectic street where

the cars always stopped for me.

I took that for granted.

Brave enough to take a roaring beast

Ten times your tiny hissing frame, so brave yet

Nothing beneath its rolling rubber rampage.

Your four brave, tiny feet,

abandoned on the busy street,

now weigh heavily in

a shoe box.
