VOLUNTEER TO BE MY FRIEND

My mom woke me up

this morning.

she looked at me

expectantly like

she wanted to tell me

something exciting.

I yawned and sat up

in my bed.

Huh.

I murmured,

still half asleep.

My mom looked

at me and said

Oh, well, actually

sweetie, I’ll tell you

after you get ready.

Probably while you’re

eating breakfast,

because I have a meeting

at 8:30 with some clients

and need to go pretty soon.

My mom works in a bank,

but she never really talks

about her job.

Probably because she deals

with people’s money.

I hopped out of bed and

ran over to my closet.

I wonder what she

wants to tell me?

bad, so what is it?

I kept asking myself

these questions

as I got ready,

and when I reached

the bottom of the staircase

to eat breakfast in

the kitchen,

my mom stopped me and

put her manicured hands

on my shoulders.

Okay, sweetie, my

friend Nicole, you

know her daughter

Cassie.

Wait, who’s Cassie?

Oh. You don’t know her?

Well, they are forming a group

to do some volunteering

at the local dog rescue

this weekend, and I was

hoping that you could

ask a friend if they want to

come with you!

Uh, mom, you know that I

don’t have any friends anymore.

She cupped my face in her hands

And kissed my forehead.

Got her coat, and left me to get in her car.

I looked at Mara and her

new group.

They were huddled and giggling.

Ugh, I hate them.

I barely heard the bell ring

and I walked into building

400, where my science classroom is.

I yawned as I was walking and

my eyes filled with water.

It’s this weird thing that happens

to me and I really hate it because

sometimes it fogs up my glasses.

I brushed away the tears

that weren’t tears from my eyes

and stopped behind someone

in the line to get into the classroom

I never cared to look at

Until now.

Or, well, I’d actually never

even seen him until now.

He looked at me

but I quickly looked away.

He was sorta cute… wait

no, you like Connor…

but he is cute…

I froze.

And then I melted when

I looked at him again.

I said quietly.

He sighed and looked away

from me, so I decided to

take a better look at him.

He was a smaller height than average

like me, but he was still taller

than me.

He had medium brown eyes

that were the same color as his skin.

He was wearing a light blue

Santa Cruz shirt and some black

sweatpants with grey Vans.

He shifted on his feet and leaned against

the white brick wall and stared

at the wall across from us.

I wanted to lean on the wall, but

didn’t really want to be weird

by copying him, so I stayed standing.

Finally, after what felt like

forever, people started filing into

the classroom.

I said good morning to Mr. Conley

and sat in my seat.

In my science class, we have tables

instead of desks because of the experiments

we do sometimes.

My table only has three people at it,

me, Josie, and Hunter.

I sat down and saw that the boy in

line was just standing in the front of the class.

Once everyone was seated,

Mr. Conley walked over to the boy.

He said,

I looked over at him and

saw that he was looking at me.

I looked away and I think

Hayden did too.

I secretly hoped that the

open seat next to me

was where he was going to sit.

Hmmm, Hayden, Hayden,

Hayden, where will you sit?

Mr. Conley thought out loud.

He looked at my table and

I made a little smile

as to seem friendly enough

for a new student at my table.

But he looked toward the other table

of three in the class.

My smile fell.

How about you sit next

to nice Jocelyn over there, buddy.

Mr. Conley patted Hayden’s back

as Jocelyn waved shyly

to let Hayden know where she was sitting.

I sighed.

I guess I’ll never be able to talk to him

again now that he’s sitting at the

other table.

I see him talking with his new table

and I suddenly feel jealous.

and you’re already jealous?

I went to Social Studies and

took some notes on the

geography of the world.

Pretty boring stuff if you ask me.

I’m excited to learn about

the Industrial Revolution in America

and World War 1.

I couldn’t wait to get to the end

of class and probably missed some

information. But oh well.

I mean, the internet can teach me.

Finally, the end of class bell rang,

and my backpack was packed up and

I was totally ready to leave.

I rushed out the door before anyone in

my class and ran to

Room 432,

my creative writing class.

Ms. Burtyn was standing in the doorway

and welcomed me enthusiastically like always.

Hi Fayth! How are you?

I’m good! How are you?

She went on to greet other students

and I sat down at my table.

The tables in this classroom were circular

and had about 5 seats each.

I don’t mind being alone,

especially when I’m writing.

I was just finishing organizing my supplies

when Ms. Burtyn clapped 4 times,

the sign to give her our attention.

I looked up and guess who I saw.

The one and only…

Hayden Kennard.

I thought that he was gone forever,

but nope!

My eyes widened a little out of surprise.

Class, today we have a new student,

Hayden!

Has anybody had class with him yet?

I slowly raised my hand.

It looked like I was the only one

who had seen him already.

Hayden shrugged and nodded.

I hesitated but finally said

Sure.

He walked over and sat in a seat

so that there was one chair

in between us.

He got his supplies out of his

navy blue backpack,

while I went to get paper for us

to write on.

I sat back down at the table

and gave each of us a couple

sheets of paper.

I took my mechanical pencil

and made the point

a little longer while

my stomach was doing a gymnastics

floor routine.

What are you gonna write?

Oh, um, I write poems and stuff

like that.

Cool.

What are you gonna write?

I-I actually don’t know…

I guess something will

pop into my brain at some point.

He laughed.

So I laughed with him.

I was almost shaking out of excitement

because I was actually talking to him now.

It also seemed like he had a

little bit of a lisp when he talked.

Cute.

We both wrote until it was

almost time to pack up for lunch.

I was scared to ask him, but I also really

wanted to at the same time.

I decided to just go for it, and if he

says no,

then I’ll get over it and it’ll be fine.

Here it goes…

Do you wanna eat lunch with me?

I spoke really quickly.

It probably sounded like gibberish to him.

What?

Yep, it totally sounded like gibberish to him.

Sorry, do you wanna eat lunch with me?

I closed my eyes tightly waiting

for the answer…

Sure.

I smiled hugely and released a breath that I

didn’t know I was holding in.

Oh, okay!

I tried not to sound too enthusiastic.

but, now I finally might have a friend to talk to!

and maybe I can ask him if he wants to go

to volunteer with me!
