I am the author of nine law-related textbooks and two reference books on various subjects that include business law, the legal environment of business, immigration law, and intellectual property. On July 1, I published the second edition of my A Primer to Immigration Law and Compliance. The book offers a brief but very thorough introduction to the subject of benefit for anyone interested in knowing details about the many legal paths to immigration to the United States for both temporary (e.g., pleasure, business, education, and work) and permanent residence. The book also covers details about the requirements and process to apply for asylum and refugee status and statistical data covering both. Finally, the book takes a close look at the process mandated for employers to verify the identity and right to work in the U.S. for hired employees, including the record-keeping and civil and criminal penalties that attach to improper vetting of employees through the Form I-9 immigration compliance process.
The first edition of this mini-textbook (four chapters) published under a non-exclusive arrangement with my current textbook publisher was aimed at university and college courses on law-related subjects, I am maintaining questions for further study and ethics and the law questions and exercises that faculty who adopt the book as a supplemental text in business law and related courses that do not traditionally cover immigration or immigration compliance. I intend this second edition of my book to be available not just in college bookstores, but to the general public as an accessible and very inexpensive reference for what is one of the most polarizing and divisive issues today. Despite the high level of interest, political controversy, and acrimonious debate on the subject, there is precious little accurate information presented about what our current law requires for legal immigration to the U.S., and the reasons that drive even some people who qualify to immigrate legally to illegally enter or overstay temporary visas because of the roadblocks that make it impractical for them to choose the path of legal migration.
Because I want this book to be available not just to students but to anyone who wants accurate information about immigration law to draw their own conclusions about what (if anything) needs to be done to fix what most people believe to be a broken system, I chose to release this updated edition in eBook, audiobook, soft-cover and hard-cover versions ranging in price from $4.99 to $15.99. I hope libraries will make it available to their patrons. But in the meantime, I want it to be affordable to everyone.
Please note that in order to avoid the awkwardness and disruption to the flow of the narration, footnotes and endnotes are omitted from both the eBook and audiobook versions of the book. Also, for obvious reasons, the audiobook version excludes charts and digitized versions of forms. The eBook version features the few charts and forms contained in the book, and both the soft-cover and hard-cover versions of the book contain charts, forms, footnotes and endnotes.
You can sample the eBook and audiobook versions at the Amazon link by clicking HERE. The book is available from wide-range of book sellers in more than 45 countries, with more to be added shortly, though not all will feature all versions of the book and pricing may vary beyond my suggested retail price. If you are interested in buying the book, note that you can buy both the eBook version of the book for $4.99 at Amazon and add the Audible version for just an extra $1.99. (The stand-alone audiobook retails at Audible for $6.99.)
