只有一個詞可以形容這首歌：經典，這首是西洋樂的經典。
故事從主角在晚間駕車開始，在疲累之下，他決定投宿加州旅館。旅館女主人引領他入住，主角聽到有某些竊竊私語說着「歡迎來到加州旅館」，主角很快發現這間旅館的人都縱情享樂，他也嘗試加入，但他卻感覺到有些不對勁。這時，女主人告訴他，這裏所有人都是自身的囚徒。在所有客人群聚的宴會上，他們拿着餐刀刺向被當成珍饈的那頭猛獸，但卻無法殺死它。主角想要逃離加州旅館回到他之前的地方，旅館清潔工卻告訴他，加州旅館只進不出，他隨時都可以退房，但他永遠都無法離開這裏。
這首歌有多種解讀，有諷刺拜金主義的，有諷刺美國音樂工業的，當然也可以當成一個鬼故事來看啦。詞中隱喻和雙關詞超多，我認為最點睛的是”Spirit”，在曲中指的是烈酒，但事實上指的是精神，扣上全句”We haven't had that spirit here since 1969"，在七十年代沒有了的精神，到底是指什麼呢～？這就見仁見智啦。
另外，Tiffany和Benz真的很常在各種西洋曲中被cue到。
