For a very long time Cronos ruled earth and heaven,no one knows for how long exactly because it was such a long time ago.
He was his fathers son,a tyrant cruel and unpredictable.
But one day the winds blew among the oak trees on the mountains and he heard a whyspering voice calling: "The time will come,when the King will be cast down.Another will rule in his place."
Now,Cronos knew that the whysperings of prophecy weren't to be ignored;he himself had overthrown his father,and someone would likely attempt to do it again.
So he devised a plan.
As Rhea his sister bore children,six in all,he swallowed them whole.
All,that is, except for one.
Rhea by this time hated her brother,what for his rape of her and his cruelty towards others,and had heard of the prophecy.(Women always find out what their husbands are up too.)
Together with Mother Earth,they themselves devised a plan.
"I will give you a stone of no great size,my child,"Gaea said."It came from Heaven itself in a blaze of fire,so it must be portended.Tell him the child is stillborn.And then we shall spirit away your real child to a secret place."
And so Cronos was unsuspecting of the ruse,and satisfied that any threat to his power vanquished,he resumed his normal life of debauchery.
This last child was taken to Crete by a pair of doves and secreted into a cave near the roaring ocean.Gaea put up such a frightful noise of men fighting that Cronos never did hear the baby crying.
This fortunate babe,who had escaped the fate befallen the others,was raised by a mother goat and soon reached manhood on Crete.
His name was Zeus.
