Aileen
Aileen watches the flames of the scented candles dance as she breathes in their pleasant aroma. For the most part, she's enjoying living in the moment, rather than dwelling on what happened with Jenna. It was painful, she got hurt by Jenna blocking her and she scared the living daylights out of Jenna mostly likely. The thought of scaring Jenna is unbearable. The last thing Aileen wants now is to break down in a sob of tears infront of her friends. Because then everyone will ask questions, pry and the secrets, Aileen hides won't be no secret anymore.
Her parents will find out. If there's one thing she can say without a doubt about the town, everyone's nosy as hell. She wriggles around when one of her friends moves suddenly in the water—the hot tub bubbles splash right up into her face!
Saki looks at Aileen suspiciously. 'Is something wrong?' She asks the question tersely, narrowing her hazel eyes. Saki can be quite mean when she wants to. 'You've been tense this whole evening.' Aileen shrugs, refusing to answer.
Concerned, Saki glances at Nadia, who is leaning against the edge of the hot tub, playing with her short red ponytail, staring deep into the water, as if she's afraid to join the rest of them. 'Yeah...' Nadia is almost silent, not interacting with the group. Her expression focused on the water.
'C'mon girls, leave her alone.' Cooper interrupts them. Saki ignores him, shaking her head in disapproval, her long pastel purple hair swaying gently around her face. She places a hand on Nadia's arm, encouraging her to join them in the hot tub. Nadia refuses at first but eventually gives in. Zachary, running his fingers through his white hair, raises an eyebrow at the pair as Saki begins to massage Nadia's back. The two girls are Zachary's biggest allies in the group—they always fall in line with what he wants.
Who can blame them really? His attractive as hell. If you turned to the dictionary, looking up the word attractive, the only thing on the page would be a photo of him.
The girls also seem to share a bond; Saki is much nicer, softer even, to Nadia than anybody else.
'Hey Aileen, you've been really closed off tonight. Feeling blue because you'll forever be alone?' Nadia smiles snidely. Aileen feels her pulse quicken. Does Nadia actually know something or is she just trying to get under her skin? They all know that Aileen is the only one of the group who hasn't had a serious relationship before. Confused, Cooper, Saki and Zachary all glare at Nadia.
Under their eyes, Nadia blushes faintly. 'Alright... sorry!' Nadia says, bluntly. 'Not,' she whispers to herself, thinking no one will hear her—but Aileen does.
Aileen knows she should be the bigger person in response to Nadia's pettiness, but she just can't help herself. 'I'm surprised you came this evening, Nadia.' Aileen smirks at her.
Nadia tries to keep her face blank. 'What are you talking about?'
'Oh, you know...' Aileen taunts her. 'Don't try to play dumb. There's no need to hide your fears, especially among friends. Remember the Be Accepting Of Others Workshop that a Rights For All Group ran at our school a few months ago?' She looks around at the rest of the group, asking, 'we're all friends here, right guys?'
'Yeah...' Zachary is the first to respond; he seems confused for a moment, then he remembers. Wolves and Meifwa's. What does that workshop have to do with Nadia? He can't stand Wolves and Meifwa's, the concepts are just too weird for him, in his opinion too, un-natural. Because they're not supposed to exist, but they do.
Nadia begins to tremble—Saki tries to pull her close for a hug, but Nadia suddenly leaps from the hot tub and grabs her towel. A pair of soft, feline ears have appeared, peeking through her hair, along with a slowly wriggling tail that just pokes out the top of her bikini bottoms.
'Nadia? Come back! It's OK, I promise!' Saki yells as she climbs hurriedly out of the hot tub. 'You shouldn't feel ashamed of who you are!'
'Well, I am ashamed of who I am, Saki! I'm not the same as you, human! How am I supposed to exist in this world when our experiences growing up won't be the same as eachothers?' Nadia drips water all over the polished tiles as she grabs her things. 'I hate being a Meifwa! I hate myself!' She sprints up the stairs towards their hotel room—Saki follows her, hurriedly.
'What just happened? I'm so confused! Is she a-a...' Zachary murmurs dully.
'She's a Meifwa,' Aileen tells him.
'She's a c-cat? A feline.'
'Yes. You remember the workshop from months ago, right?' Cooper turns to face Zachary.
Zachary nods in his head in shame while anger manifests inside. 'Stupid animals. I wanted to forget they existed.'
'Uh, well... So, do a-lot of people. Including they uh- animals?' Cooper stammers, looking to Aileen frightened as his not interested in insulting them. They get enough flack as it is, they're whole existences is a whole legal grey area mess. 'Look, they're still conscious souls, alright?
The world has to adapt to this 2nd class of people whether it likes it or not after the accident. Calling it that though is really an understatement. It wasn't an accident, it was torture. A crime.
And then, their off-spring inherited the gene mutation. After the accident, you remember how many off-spring then inherited the gene mutation which led to the government's aired dirty laundry being blown out way of proportion.
'I know.'
'Nadia is a Meifwa—she's been hiding it from everyone since, well, forever. She's not dangerous, Zachary. Unlike Wolves... Cat's are far more... domesticated? God, I feel sick phrasing it like this.' Cooper's tone is careful, his chestnut eyes serious.
'Yes, not dangerous! Ah, I love cats!' Aileen chimes in, smiling sincerely. 'Come on, you must have paid some attention to the workshop, right? They're trying to fit into society with us humans!'
'Yeah, yeah, whatever. I get it. Legal grey area. Not human, but lock them up and deprive them of every single right a conscious person has and every rights group, news outlet, the united nations and other countries will be right down on-top of our government, privvy to what's going on. The first scandal was something, but a 2nd scandal? Bad idea.
But I definitely know that I don't like 'em at all! They're creepy human-hybrids... I would've appreciated ya'll letting me in on information I needed to know though! That one of our own's a damn cat.'
'At the end of the day, she's still our Nadia, Zachary we all know and love. Reserved at time but has good taste in clothes.' Cooper blusters, unable to hide it. Despite being a cat, Nadia is a very pretty female.
'Nadia never asked to be born a Meifwa. Her own mum was human once too. If the government didn't do this, Nadia would have been born without ears and a tail. So, don't hold this against her, okay?'
Zachary interrupts again. 'I don't want to continue this lecture, Cooper.'
'Even if you don't care, Meifwa's and Wolves deserve the right to coexist with us, in peace. One could argue they're technically humans still. It's happening whether you like it or not.'
'Yeah! And, legislations are changing, they're starting to figure out the previous laws so they're less under scrutiny. There's a lot of things, Nadia can do already, like work a job, own possessions, still have to pay tax because the government needs, they're money, but one of the things from the list, Nadia can't do is get married. One day, Nadia will be able to marry someone and it won't be considered... bestiality for example... She looks and behaves like a cat.' Aileen jumps in.
'We've been building up to this as a society. I don't know if there are any other Meifwas or Wolves living in our small town as they tend to keep their tails and ears hidden, but maybe you could go online and learn about them more, seek out the groups online aimed at—'
Zachary holds up his hand, cutting her off. 'I don't want to hear this acceptance spiel anymore. You're both fucking deluded. Go get eaten by that stupid cat trying to pass for a human!' He hisses angrily as he exits the hot tub, grumbling that Nadia likely eats mice for every meal.
Aileen and Cooper are now the only two left in the tub. They sit back, both stunned by Zachary's attitude and cruel words.
'Oh God, I've really got to apologise to Nadia! What have I done? I mean, she started it, but she really didn't deserve that.' Aileen is frantic. 'What does that say about me, Cooper? As a human and a person? Will Nadia hate me forever?'
'No! No, Aileen. Don't worry too much—you're not really a bully. Deep down, you're way more than you show sometimes.' Cooper grimaces. 'Man... but Zachary? I mean, he's not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I seriously didn't think he'd be so ignorant, straight up rude!'
'I know,' Aileen says, wiping away her tears. Although, she thinks to herself, out of all of us, I guess it would be Zachary... he can be pretty cruel, bordering on downright evil sometimes.
'Look, it's up to us three—me, you and Saki. We should be ambassadors of love and peace for humans, so Nadia feels accepted. What Nadia just went through is probably just the beginning of the abuse they and their Wolf counterparts face. Bullying is no life for anyone. If she faces constant bullying, she'll feel so afraid and become distant from us. I don't want to lose a friend.' Cooper says this firmly.
'Yeah, you're so right! I love that idea. Youth, a new generation of it infact have the power to change things. Oh, I love new age concepts! Reminds me of J- nevermind.' Aileen rises to her feet and hops out of the tub. She reaches for her towel, dries herself off and heads back up to the hotel. Cooper stays right where he is, looking up at the stars in the night sky. His thinking.

A little later, Aileen sits in a deckchair out on a balcony, enjoying the twinkling stars. She hears soft footsteps approach and Zachary's hand grasps her shoulder, his grip somewhat fierce. 'Aileen, can we talk?'
'That's my name, don't wear it out.' Aileen sounds a little bitter. Zachary pulls up a deckchair next to her. 'What's wrong? You haven't been yourself at all today,' he says with what looks like concern, but she can't be sure.
'I'm sorry about the way, Nadia treated you earlier and it's obvious I'm struggling to see past my biases. I don't really know what growing up is like if you're not human, but I do know that she wouldn't really have meant to tease you like she did. She's a nice girl.' He sighs loudly. 'For the most part,' he adds, 'I'm not a jerk, I promise. I don't know what came over me before, but I really am fine with her being a Meifwa... It's cool, we're cool right?' He sounds defensive; Aileen isn't sure she believes him.
'I'm fine,' Aileen says, hoping she can convince him. 'She's obviously just got stuff on her mind, y'know? Just like you said.'
'No shit, detective! We all do, believe me.' Zachary laughs conceitedly, causing Aileen to flinch. His expression appears dark. 'But, tell me, really... is everything OK? You're sitting out here, awake and alone, and it's well past midnight. Aren't you cold?'
Aileen shrugs and turns away from him. 'I'm all good—go back to bed.'
'Don't be stupid, I'm not going back to bed without you.' Insistently, he pulls at her arm. 'Tell me what's going on?'
Reluctantly, she turns to look at him. 'Ugh, fine. But don't call me stup- daft again, I don't like it when you call us names... I'll tell you if I can borrow your phone?'
'Sure thing.' He passes it to her. Downloading the dating app only takes a minute, the hotel WIFI is top of the line. She quickly finds her last conversation with Jenna and hands the phone to Zachary. He scrolls for a few minutes; Aileen watches his eyes slowly widen.
'Wait... Jenna?! As in, nerdy Jenna from school, the gaming geek? She's Simplicity? Not to mention, a dyke clearly. You both have been talking?' Zachary stares at her, incredulously. 'And now you've accidentally discovered who each other is and she just blocked you?'
'Correction,' Aileen interrupts him. 'Jenna doesn't know it was me,' she says, blushing. 'Look, we were supposed to go on a date, and she was super late—I thought she was going to flake, I was about to bail when I saw her rushing towards the door, and that's when I just knew she was the one I had been talking to...' Aileen trails off for a moment. 'I knew she was Simplicity.'
Zachary takes her hands in his. 'Look, maybe you should forget about that nerdy loser... You could do somuch better; she's nothing compared to you.' He glances at Aileen. 'Look, I know you were friends with Jenna once, you were younger then, but you've changed so much since—your life is so different now!'
He lowers his voice. 'Look, how do you know she won't only care about your money if you both actually date? She's, like, super poor...' Uncomfortable, Aileen pulls her hand away as Zachary continues. 'I mean, I didn't know you were into girls,' he says, nervously, 'but... if you ever wanted to, I'd love to take you out on a date, and give you all the finer things you deserve.'
Aileen shakes her head, startled. 'Zachary, no! Thank you, but... I don't—I don't want to be with you.'
Zachary looks quite offended, angry even. Is he going to punch a hole in a wall again or leave bruises like last time he got angry? Should she cry out for Cooper? Will he even hear her? It takes a moment, but then it hits her; she knows why—he's never been turned down by a girl before! Usually, they're falling head over heels for him. He can be charming when he wants, despite his arrogance and rudeness, and she can see he's attractive—striking bleached hair and you can tell he works out regularly.
'I was just trying to help!' His face is bright red. 'But, you're the one missing out!' Aileen can tell it's taking a lot of his energy to brush off the rejection and not lose his shit otherwise hotel security will eject him from the premises—he gets up a little too quickly to pretend he's not bothered. He looks at Aileen once more, speechless, before turning and walking away.
'Gaaahhhh!' Aileen tries to go back to relaxing in the deckchair, closing her eyes. But soon, she hears footsteps approaching again. 'Zachary, seriously! Go away before you do something and the hotel calls the police or something.'
'Hey... it's me...' Cooper says, sheepishly. Aileen turns around, surprised. 'I overheard some of your conversation with Zachary... sorry for being nosy. Did you bail on a date with Jenna Trilby?'
Aileen nods, slowly. 'Oh, man, I'm sorry. Things like that can be so stressful. Emotions suck, hey!' He laughs lightly, flashing a smile at her. Aileen can't help but giggle.
'Thanks for the support, Cooper, it means a lot.' She pats the deckchair next to her as an invitation to sit down.
Cooper gets comfortable. 'Do you know if Jenna's still friends with Danny?' Aileen looks at him, questioningly. He shrugs. 'I used to be friends with him in primary school, is all. We occasionally talk online, but that's about the extent of it. I don't know much about Jenna, though. We've had a few classes together, never talked though.'
'Yeah, I think she's friends with him, but I don't really know for sure... Why are you asking me?' She asks, her curiosity getting the better of her.
Cooper looks at her brightly. 'You'll see! Zachary might be able to turn on the charm, but so can I!' He says, flashing her two thumbs up. 'Anyway, it's late, time you go back to bed,' he adds, helping Aileen to her feet.
As they walk slowly back to their beds, Cooper whispers in her ear. 'This might be a shock to you, but Saki and Nadia are secretly dating!'
Aileen stares at him, her mouth open. 'What?! Are you sure? A human and a Meifwa?'
'Yep! But, I don't think they want anyone to know. It is controversial, y'know?' Aileen looks confused, so Cooper elaborates. 'Because they're not only a human and Meifwa couple, but they're lesbians, too. I tried to tell them neither is a bad thing, but it all fell on deaf ears!'
'I just thought I'd tell you to show you're not an outsider, alright, by liking Jenna. You're perfect just the way you are.'
'Oh, Cooper. You're very sweet.' Aileen sniffles a little. 'But, tell me, how did you find out they were dating?'
'Ha! I caught them!' He laughs, throwing his fist in the air.
Aileen shakes her head and ruffles Cooper's hair. 'Oh, you stalker!'
'Nahhh!' He laughs, but then turns to her with a serious look on his face. 'Oh, and, you should know that it really is OK you like Jenna. Forget what Zachary said. But, I think you're going to have to talk to her soon—clear the air, you know.'
Aileen doesn't know what to say, so she gives him a tiny nod. Deep down, she knows he's right.
Jenna
Jenna sighs, resting her chin on her folded arms. Mathaniel is curled up against her feet. This cafe is much more secluded than the wannabe club, much nicer and her scene. Bright colours, plants, food that's not cheap quality, though slightly on the pricer side, yet still affordable.
'Cheer up, if you can, Jenna. I don't want to see you sad,' Daniel says gently, patting her arm.
Jenna grits her teeth. 'I can't just forget about a whole relationship in one day, Danny!'
'I know, I know, I'm sorry!' He changes the subject quickly. 'Alright, let's order something to eat—being hungry can heighten your emotions!' Daniel waves his arm in the air. 'Excuse me!' He calls dramatically across the restaurant, and a young, female waitress slowly makes her way over to their table. Her long, wavy raven hair rests on her shoulders, blending into the dark purple of her French maid uniform. On her head is a pair of cat ears—they look extremely realistic!
'Oh! Hi, Danny!' She seems surprised to see him. 'It's so nice to see you back here again so soon. And this time with a friend!' She says this with what might be fake sweetness, focusing all her attention on Daniel before glaring at Jenna. 'Are you ready for me to take your orders? We have a purrrfect range of specials that might interest you.' Her tone is somewhat dismissive; she waves her hand vaguely in the direction of the specials board.
Suddenly, the waitress is interrupted by Mathaniel growling. The Lucky Kitty staff usually don't mind whether pets come inside. Jenna looks at the waitress and narrows her eyes as she spots a tail sticking out from underneath her dress. It's almost too lifelike, much like the hyper-realistic ears on her head...
'Oh, stop it, I'm not a real cat! T-this is a costume! I work in anime themed café for a living...' Hearing her harsh tone, Mathaniel backs down, beginning to whimper. Jenna and Daniel hardly have time to register that the tail is moving on its own before it suddenly vanishes back underneath the waitress's dress—they almost jump out of their skin in shock! Noticing their astonishment, the waitress throws her writing pad on the table to get their attention, only to pick it up again. 'Oops, sorry! Butterfingers!' She says this snidely, giving her best customer service smile before her cheery tone returns. 'Now, what would you both like to eat and drink?
How may I serve you this fine evening?'
The pair settle on vegetarian pizza and two cans of strawberry lemonade, and the waitress brings Mathaniel a bowl of water. While they wait for their food, Jenna asks Daniel how often he comes to the cafe and whether he thought the waitress was a Meifwa or it's just a very realistic looking costume and their eyes are playing tricks on them. He clearly doesn't want to talk about it and repeatedly avoids her questions.
By the time the food arrives, they're both starving and dig in quickly. Soon after, they leave the cafe, very full. Daniel halts Jenna as she makes her way to his car. 'Jenna?'
'Yes, Danny?'
'Hey, umm, I was wondering... Can I come back to your house?'
'My house?'
'Yeah, b-but, only if you're OK with it, a-and your parents.'
'Danny, you know my parents work they graveyard shift... They won't be there and, you know, you're welcome any time. You don't even have to ask. What's wrong? All of a sudden, you're acting... weird. You're scaring me a little.'
'I-I'm sorry, I-I just...'
'You just what?'
'That waitress inside...'
'Yes...?'
'She's my ex. We didn't last more than a couple of months. I was ashamed to tell anyone. We dated in secret, but in the end, we were just too different... S-she is a Meifwa. A-and I knew she worked there, but when I texted earlier, she said she wasn't working tonight. She lied to me for some reason. Do you think she hates me? Angry or jealous that we broke up? Wait, she's never met you before. Crap, she might have been scoping you out. Thinks we're dating, that you're my rebound, maybe...'
'Oh... I'm sorry. Thank you for telling me. That's must've taken a lot of courage... As for what she thinks, I don't know. You need to talk her, that's the only advice I can give you...'
Talk about awkward.
'Yeah...' Daniel whispers, looking down at his shoes, embarrassed.
'Do you want to chill back at my place, Danny? Is that what you're asking me?'
'Yeah.'
'OK then, awesome-sauce! We can grab some snacks and pop a DVD on! Come with me, there's a convenience store's right next to the cafe, and then we'll head back to my place.'
The pair, with Mathaniel, begin to walk. Soon, they hear a rustle coming from an alleyway that descends into darkness on their right-hand side. 'Did you hear that? What was it?' Jenna's tone is scared.
'I don't know...' As the pair take a step towards the entrance of the alley, Mathaniel crouches low to the ground, growling softly.
'Ah, Mathaniel!' Daniel scolds his dog. He turns to Jenna. 'It's probably a stray cat finding a meal in a bin. Mathaniel is, uh, not so tolerant of cats...' Awkwardly, Daniel looks back towards Lucky Kitty.
His dog was one of the reasons they broke up.
'Let's just grab our snacks and bolt. It's getting dark.'
They continue onwards—suddenly, two glowing eyes and a set of sharp silver teeth appear in the darkness before them. 'Shit, Jenna get behind me. Now!' Daniel commands, stepping in front of her, holding his arms out. Mathaniel starts to bark, loudly.
The presence in the alleyway moves slowly towards them, revealing itself to be a Wolf-Human hybrid, with a fluffy tail and pointed ears. His clothes are dirty and ripped to shreds—he looks about the same age as Daniel and Jenna. 'Wallet! Give me your wallet now, or I'll take a bite out of your girl over there.'
Danny gulps audibly; Jenna lets out a squeak. "Danny, wolves are dangerous..."
Taking a shaky breath, Daniel starts to plead with the Wolf. 'Hey man, we're cool, OK? W-we don't hate your kind. We love your kind, Meifwas too!'
'Meifwas are good for nothing but being squeaky chew toys. Why on earth you humans ever thought messing with animal DNA was a good idea beats me! Y'all did this and now treat us like second-class citizens. If there's one positive, though—at least you humans finally created a hell of a real monster, compared to a bunch of stupid cats.'
The Wolf shakes his head and snarls. 'But, none of that can be changed now, so... give me your wallet! You owe me!'
'Hey!' Daniel shouts back despite himself, but this only makes the Wolf angrier—he
Suddenly, the front doors of the cafe burst open—the waitress stands in the doorway, hissing, armed with a broom. Her brown eyes, glowing a little in the darkness, beginning to look yellow and appear to eleongate. Her olive skin seems to be turning a shade of grey. Her nose is twitching, and slight whiskers are starting to protrude on either side of her cheeks, her teeth starting to appear sharp like vampire teeth.
'Oh, shit!' The Wolf gasps, taking off back down the alley; he knocks over a trash can, then clumsily tumbles over a wall, falling several metres to the ground to the other side.
'W-what just happened...?' Jenna stammers. Her heart feels like it's ready to leap out of her chest. The waitress lets out a low hiss and turns around, marching back inside the cafe with her broom, her hair flying around her shoulders.
'Naomi, wait!' Daniel begs, one arm extended towards her; but his feet don't bend to his will, and he remains stuck where he is. 'Danny, go home and just bed this chick!' Naomi shouts back over her shoulder.
'Danny, leave it.' Jenna wraps her hands around his arm, looking disturbed. 'Let's just go, not stick around here. You can hash out your breakup with her later, please. I'm scared, my heart is racing a million miles an hour and it's cold out here!'
Daniel relents, and they head to the convenience store for some snacks. Back at Jenna's house, they settle down in front of her parent's television, Mathaniel curled up on the floor in front of their feet.
Jenna rests against a pillow on the arm of the couch. 'I can barely keep my eyes open,' she mumbles as she drifts off to sleep. A few hours pass and Jenna wakes to the soft sound of Daniel texting; his face is illuminated by the phone screen in the dark lounge. 'Hey Danny, are you alright?'
'Jenna! When did you wake up?' Daniel looks at her, startled. 'Yeah, I'm alright, I'm just chatting to an old friend. Go back to sleep,' he encourages her. 'You've had a stressful day, combined with an awful fright before.'
Jenna's interested is piqued; she doesn't want to go back to sleep. 'An old friend? What time is it? And, don't forget, the only friend you need is right here!' She jokes with him; Daniel rolls his eyes and lets out a chuckle.
'It's just after midnight, and we've just got back in touch.' Daniel shifts uncomfortably on the couch. 'He just told me he's landed his first job! It's part time, but a job nonetheless! I'm really excited for him...' Daniel trails off, trying not to blush.
Luckily, Jenna is slowly dozing back to sleep and not really paying attention to what he's saying. 'That's nice...' She murmurs, just as her eyes close again. Daniel drapes a blanket overher and turns the movie down a little before returning to his phone. For awhile, he smiles, contentedly. Then a new message arrives—his face pales andhis expression changes as he reads it.287Please respect copyright.PENANAm6rZ4sQQAV
