Ariana’s PoV:
I feel a swift breeze blow against my skin, the cold making my skin line with goosebumps as I try to force my eyes open. It takes me a while to, my vision slightly blurry once I get them open, making me blink several times to get it to clear out. I look around myself, startled by my surroundings. I’m on a cart, that’s filled with hay and being pulled by two horses. The driver wears a dark hooded cloak, making it impossible for me to see who it is.
I look around in a panic, my body shaking from the slight cold as I notice the orange and yellow hues of the sky, indicating it's sunset. My eyes spiral around the area as I realize I am no longer in the Royal territory but somewhere near steep hills and cliffs.
My eyes find their way back to the hooded figure. Whoever it was did not think or care about me trying to escape. If they had, they would have tied down my arms and ankles so that I couldn’t leave, but they hadn’t. So whoever this person was, they were either an absolute idiot or someone with too much confidence in themselves.
I looked down to the side of the cart to watch the land move beneath it. I could easily jump off, even though the cart was moving faster than I would have preferred for it to move. A part of me didn’t want to leave, though, a part wanted to know where this person was taking me and who they were.
So when the cart comes to a sudden halt that forces my body forward, and a loud gasp of surprise escapes me, I’m not worried. Especially, when the hooded figure snaps its head towards me.
My eyes widen as they peer into emerald green eyes. The person before me has me more astonished than anything that’s happened in my life for the past few months.
“Sisily!” I can’t help myself as I screech out her name, my voice filled with relief, “Wh...what are you doing here?”
“Well, hello to you too,” Sisily says almost mockingly,” I was expecting a thank you, but I guess this will do.”
I narrow my eyes at her, not understanding her, till realization dawns on me as the memories of the courtroom and the dead wolves come back. I shiver with disgust at the memories and look down at my hands, realizing they’re still stained in blood.
My body starts to tremble at the ghastly sight as my eyes fill with unshed tears. I killed someone.
I killed.
I look back at the Sisly, seeing her eyes fill with concern once they fixate on my trembling figure. I bite out, “Why?.... Why are you helping me?..... You should’ve left me to die. I killed. I’m going to be the monster...”
My words are cut short when I feel a warm hand on my shoulder, making me look up to see that she is now standing beside me.
" I can’t tell you why I am helping you... not yet at least,” she said, her voice solemn, ” but know this, you did not kill the wolves because you wanted to harm them. You killed them to defend yourself.”
I look at her, studying her calm features before the realization dawns on me, “How do you know I was defending myself... you weren’t even there.”
My words sound accusing as I move away from Sisily, not trusting her.
" I was there,” She says,” you just never saw me.”
I narrow my eyes at her, not believing her, before huffing out loud with frustration. At this moment in time, I didn’t know who I could trust and where I could go. I could probably go home to my family, but I doubt my father would ever take me back willingly. Even Nate can’t help me when it comes to our father.
Sighing out loud, I look back at the Sisily, “You do realize that you're helping me will be considered as treason.”
She nods, her expression almost reminding me of Burty.
“So you would also know that you can lose your position as palace maid if we get caught,” she nods again at hearing my words, “then why are you helping me, when this will only cause you trouble if we get found?”
Sisily chuckles, making me give her a confused expression as she gets up and heads to the front of the cart, forcing me to follow behind.
“Well, like I said I can’t tell you why I’m helping you,” She says, while passing me a black cloak, similar to her own, “now put this on, so that no one sees you.”
“Then how do you expect me to trust you?” Something about how Sisily was talking to me almost made me feel like a small child.
“You just have to, I guess... if you want to live, I would if I was in your place.” I narrow my eyes as I reluctantly drape the cloak over my shoulder, grateful for its protection against the wind.
“Can I at least know where you’re taking me?” I question.
“Some place that will keep you safe for now.”
