The day of the entrance exam felt tense, like a heartbeat echoing through the city. The sky was gray and heavy, blocking out the sun as if everyone was waiting for something big. Outside U.A. High, a crowd of anxious students gathered, some shaking with nerves while others tried to act tough in their uniforms and gear.
In the crowd, Midoriya felt stuck, his body tense and his hands slick with sweat. He glanced around at the other competitors, doubts creeping in. What am I even doing here? He tightened his grip on his bag strap. I can’t fight like them... I’m still figuring out my power...
Just when panic kicked in, he felt a hand on his shoulder.14Please respect copyright.PENANAlwkhVd9b1b
You got this, Hikari said, her voice calm and steady, pulling him back from the edge.
He turned to see her confident smile. She was dressed in her own practical battle outfit, and somehow her presence made him feel stronger.14Please respect copyright.PENANACylhDxKN0Q
Kari, he breathed, feeling a wave of relief.
"I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines, she told him, her voice dropping to a whisper. Remember our deal. I’m only going to this school if you do too."
Midoriya nodded, forcing a smile.14Please respect copyright.PENANAiMCVLJwasD
"I better not mess this up."
"You're not going to," Hikari winked before heading off. "You're going to impress everyone,"
Inside the Testing Arena
The loudspeaker crackled, kicking off the written exam. Time flew by as pencils scratched paper and nerves filled the air. Midoriya barely registered anything. His mind was on the upcoming physical trial—the battle simulation.
When they announced it would involve battling robots and chaos, his legs turned to jelly. He remembered All Might’s words: You can’t be a hero without a Quirk. But then he recalled Hikari’s voice: Stand tall. You can do this.
The signal blared. The students scattered. Midoriya took off.
The Test: A Tough Challenge
He struggled. Every step felt too slow, and he wasn’t scoring any points. Minutes ticked by with nothing to show.
Then he heard a scream. A girl was stuck under debris while others rushed by her. Midoriya didn’t think. He just ran.
He headed toward the danger, pushing aside the zero score haunting him. He saw her leg trapped and pain written all over her face. Above her loomed a giant robot, ready to crush her.
With a shout, Midoriya jumped, tapping into a deep well of strength he hadn’t truly trained yet. This surge of energy was new and wild. He didn’t try to hold back—he just let it flow.
His punch ripped through the air, smashing the robot’s head apart in a shower of sparks and metal. He fell to the ground hard, pain shooting through his arm and leg as he twisted unnaturally. Darkness crept into his vision, but he managed to move. He had saved her, and that was what mattered.
Later That Week…
Hikari sat on her bed, phone in hand, flinching at each vibration. She hadn’t eaten or slept much since she watched him get carried off the battlefield. Her heart felt shattered.
Then the screen lit up.
Midoriya: I got in. I got in, Kari! We’re going to U.A. together!
She gasped, tears forming in her eyes.
Midoriya (cont’d): Mom’s making dinner to celebrate. You have to come. Please?
Her fingers hovered over the screen before she typed back, smiling softly.

Stand tall, Izuku. I always knew you could be a hero—even when you doubted yourself. You're my best friend. Don’t ever forget that. It’s you and me—no matter what. I’d love to come, but I made plans with an old family friend. Tell your mom I’m proud of you. You did amazing. I’m so proud to call you my best friend. Bye. 💚
She hit send, tears rolling down her cheeks. As she wiped her eyes, the doorbell rang. She peeked through the peephole and saw Shoto Todoroki holding a bag of takeout.
“Hope you’re hungry,” he said when she opened the door. “I brought your favorite.”
She smiled gratefully and let him in, and the room filled with laughter as this chapter closed, making way for new beginnings.
