My mother tells me to stop biting my nails

I can’t

How do I tell her that watching the skin rip and bleed makes me feel in control?

I chew my nails down to the bone

A mess

Not fit for holding a man's hand

No one wants to touch bloody and torn hands

Mother doesn’t know that's my plan

If I make myself as unpresentable as possible then I won't get attention

And less attention means I don't get hurt.

I used to wear nail polish,

A bold red.

As if a nail color is permission enough to touch

As if it meant yes

My worn and dirty hands repel

Rotting in misery
