I walked back towards class after WIN, my gaze caught onto her and one of my friends. She still had those same braids in, and she seemed worried that her friend would tell someone. I glanced curiously at my friend who was also friends with her, then I saw him walk past. I wasn’t as broken anymore, but it still hurt knowing that I was not even a second option. But I entered class nonetheless and looked at the screen before walking towards my friend who was still smiling. “So are they dating?” I asked curiously and my friend smiled and nodded giddy. I remember I told them my situation but it seemed that it wasn't under the spotlight anymore. But that didn’t matter. The two suited each other anyway. I just wished the girl luck so she wouldn't end up in tears in the bathroom like I did. I just nodded, feeling like he just saw me as something to bribe then leave. But I sat down in my seat and spaced out, but this time no thoughts were in my head. Until one of my table mates sat in front of me and set down a checkered board in between the two of us. “Wanna play chess?” He asked. I stared at the board and nodded. “Sure. But I don't know how.” He then proceeded to teach me and I asked questions curiously throughout the game, trying to get a hang on it. But as I moved my pawn two places forward, taking down his pawn, his rook moved forward, taking my pawn down instantly. It reminded me of how easily I thought I had won finally, then got taken down only seconds after. “You have to think 10 steps ahead for this game.” He said, but I just nodded, realizing how things can change so quickly in just an instant when you think you just won.
