I shrug. My eyes fall to her lips before I realize what I'm doing and I quickly look down at our joined hands.
There's a gold band on her ring finger that I've seen so many times when I was a kid, and a mixture of joy and fear - and something else I can't really put my finger on - runs through me.
"Oh my God! Is this what I think it is?"
[She] follows my gaze and the moment she notices the ring, her features soften in understanding. The emerald set in white gold matches the color of her irises perfectly, exactly as it did with her mother.
"I wanted to tell you, but..."
"Oh please shut up!" I cut her off. "You really did it!"
She nods, her face turning red by the second, and my heart swells with joy.
