Stories. They've been around since humanity discovered language. Sophisticated, silly, scary, humorous, dramatic, tragic, adventure...romance. It's funny. The first time you tell a story is as true as it can possibly venture in the future. One telling is all it takes for you to begin spinning lies around the truth like a hungry lion circling its doomed prey. It's like telephone. "Shower in sacredness," you whisper into the first girl's ear. At the end, the boy says, "Bathe in wretchedness." It's true nature to lie, to build ourselves into corners for sheer survival. But is it true that nothing will get in our path to revenge?714Please respect copyright.PENANAgGt0soUFXr

The beginning of seventh grade is when I saw her first. Pre-AP Science had brought us together by the strings of the pupetteers, played with like marionettes in front of a large, young audience giggling at the preformance laid out in front of them like a dissected frog.714Please respect copyright.PENANAhD290uC739

I raised one gloved hand, knife in hand. We looked on, oblivious to how gruesome it was to kill this animal in order to use in science classes around the state. I swiftly cut into the soft flesh of the organism, her eyes widening at the sight of its internal components. I flashed a bitter smile at her as I continued to work under the supervision of my lab partner and the teacher. Dried blood crusted the edge of the knife, making it look like the sharp blade was rusting on contact with the heart. They'd sucked out a major portion of the fluid, but there was still blood, sloshing in it like a puddle of liquid velvet. 714Please respect copyright.PENANAeuIZUHZiyv

She glanced at me as I continued my grim work. Thoughts ran through my head; thoughts I've never experienced or considered before. The shine of the blade blinded her as she shifted her lab goggles. I handed the knife to her, trembling, and watched as she gingerly cut through fibers, flesh, and veins. She looked as if she were....caring for this....this emotionless, lifeless organ that once belonged in something or someone. It was almost tearjerking with the precision and gentleness she cut it with. I was satisfied with her actions and disappointed with my own. 714Please respect copyright.PENANAO2k5nh0GsA

Had I been barbaric with the way I cut through he pig heart? Was I vicious? These were all thoughts that ran in my mind, fresh and new, like the smell of freshly-cut lawn. I tugged off my gloves, the thin latex clinging to my clammy hands and threw them in the trash. I felt numb inside.714Please respect copyright.PENANA9fuGmPI6x7

After class, I walked up to her. "Hey, uh, Laurel, I was wondering what you thought of the dissection..."714Please respect copyright.PENANAHWSyOZtP83

No answer. The question hung heavily in the air like a shackled cloud. She smiled at me, pity in her eyes, and spun on her heel. Laurel Clark had ignored me. I lowered my arm and hugged myself. Was that what she thought of me? I had to improve.714Please respect copyright.PENANApcE6RXdIDy
